Obituary

Alice Ann Douglas Bradshaw was born June 22, 1940, In Shamrock, TX, to James and Jean Douglas. She passed peacefully from this life on December 20, 2014. Following a private burial, a celebration of her life will be on December 30 at 1:00 p.m. in the Singing Oaks church of Christ.

She had two sets of grandparents who lived a block apart, an idyllic scene for a young girl. Alice Ann lived with her parents and younger sister in a company camp a mile outside of Shamrock where Alice Ann played cowboys and Indians, dug caves, rode bikes, hiked, and knew a freedom few children get to enjoy.

She attended school in Shamrock until the sixth grade when the family moved to Sunray, TX, where Alice Ann would later graduate as valedictorian of Sunray High School. She attended Texas Woman's University before transferring to West Texas State University (now WTAMU). While there she received a scholarship from Shamrock Oil and Gas Co. and was a member of Alphi Chi national honor group and named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. She graduated with a BA majoring in English. Alice Ann would later receive her MA from WT. She completed course work for her doctorate at the University of Miami, Miami, Florida.

Upon graduating, Alice Ann began teaching. She was one of those rare teachers who knew how to reach students and touch their lives and to help them enjoy learning. Her first teaching position was in White Deer High School. Later she taught in Canyon High School. Her last teaching position in the Panhandle was at Amarillo College. Alice taught as a graduate assistant at the University of Miami, Miami, Florida.

While teaching at Amarillo College, Alice Ann married Durward Bradshaw, her high school sweetheart, on November 18, 1966, in Sunray, TX, at her parents' home. In 1967, they moved to Los Angeles as Durward was a pilot with Pan American. They returned to Texas and over a period of years live in Denton, Miami, FL, New Canaan, CT, Pampa, TX, and Ft. Collins, CO, as Durward later flew for United Airlines.

Alice Ann was an accomplished pianist. She loved music and while in Connecticut took lessons on the guitar. She read everything from Shakespeare to the comics. She enjoyed writing; and shortly after she graduated from college, she produced for her family a short book of essays she had written.

Alice Ann loved to travel. While in college she toured Europe with a group from the English Department. After graduation, she spent the summer in Italy before returning to White Deer to teach. She and Durward enjoyed several trips abroad together as well. She also traveled extensively throughout the United States.

She was devoted to the Lord and was a member of the Singing Oaks church of Christ. She taught primarily ladies classes. One of the ladies told Durward that she had heard them both teach and that he couldn't hold a candle to Alice Ann. Her passion was World Bible School. She started the program at Singing Oaks church of Christ with about 400 hundred students, and when health forced her to retire, she had helped grow the program to about 100,000 students mainly in Nigeria and Kenya. She spent untold hours organizing information on students and working with teams members to get papers graded and returned. For several years she drove to Lewisville to ship lessons to Africa.

Sports were a part of her interests as well. She played basketball in high school. Although the shortest girl on the team, she was in the middle of every play. She enjoyed watching football games. As an adult, she began playing tennis. The family joke was that her insurance had to be up to date because she always seemed to injure herself. She played tennis the same way she did everything else—with passion.

Her sons David and Charles were very important to her. She attended all their school events and traveled to their athletic meets. She loved them both and opted to stay home with them rather than continue her teaching career.

Alice enjoyed people and had many friends. She was a giving person and never too busy to stop and help others. Many times she would leave her work on World Bible School when she was on a deadline to take someone somewhere or even to change a light bulb for an elderly lady who could not do it herself. Her home was always open, and she and Durward left friends wherever they lived.

She enjoyed cross stitching. When she started, she carefully followed patterns and instructions. But she soon became her own designer and made Christmas ornaments commemorating all special days and events for the family—birthdays, anniversaries, trips, favorite activities.

Alice Ann was taken all too soon from her family and friends. But she leaves behind a legacy of faith and love and compassion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Jean Douglas.
Alice Ann is survived by her husband Durward, a son David and his wife Rebecca of Haslet, a son Charles of Colleyville, seven grandchildren—Brannon, Annah, Caulin, Davis, Ellah, Mia, and Maddox—one sister, Linda Sue Thompson and husband Jack of Pampa, TX.
