IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alice Rita
Gulyas
September 26, 1941 – October 12, 2023
Alice Rita (Fournier) Gulyas of Sanger, TX died October 12, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. She was born September 26, 1941 in Providence, Rhode Island to Gerard and Annette (Charpentier) Fournier. Alice graduated from Coventry High School in Coventry, RI in 1958 and from the New Hampshire State School of Nursing in 1963.
In April 1965, while serving as a bridesmaid in her cousin's wedding, she met her future husband, Donald Gulyas. Two weeks later, they decided to marry. To their dismay, their priest would not marry them unless they had been acquainted for at least six months. So, Thanksgiving weekend 1965 Alice and Donald were married. This union lasted nearly 58 years until her death and produced three children, seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way!).
Alice worked as a registered nurse in many different areas – from emergency room to geriatrics to several years as school nurse for Sanger and Pilot Point ISDs. She retired from nursing in 2000 as a nursing supervisor at Denton State Supported Living Center (formerly Denton State School).
Spending time with family was her greatest joy. She loved seeing her grandchildren grow up and have kids of their own. Her sense of humor kept us laughing and never failed to help give perspective when life got hard. In addition to time with family, playing Parcheesi and cards, she occupied her time in retirement with the baking of delicious cookies and pies (and making the best peanut butter fudge!). She enjoyed knitting and crochet, and playing with her cat, Minou. She was a lifelong Catholic and a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Denton. She was the best wife, mom, and mémère anyone could hope to have.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Gulyas of Sanger, TX; daughters Michelle Curran (Bret), Monique Gulyas (Charlie Moore), Cherie Mayfield (David), all of Denton, TX; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Her life will be celebrated Friday, October 27 with a Rosary at 10 am and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 2255 N Bonnie Brae St. Denton TX 76207.
Memorials may be made to Our Daily Bread Denton and Loreto House.
