IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Allan Mansfield
Tate
July 19, 1938 – May 25, 2023
Allan Mansfield Tate passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023. He was born July 19, 1938, in Lebanon, Indiana, to Robert H and Edna (Lasley) Tate. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1956, and the family moved to South Bend, Indiana. He lived briefly in southern California where he worked for Ling-Temco-Vought building missiles for the U S military. When he joined the Air Force, he was assigned to the 578 Strategic Missile Squadron at Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas.
Al married Mary M. Thompson in Abilene on May 29, 1964, and became a Texan for life. He worked for Vought Aircraft Industries in Greenville before settling again in Abilene. He worked for Millard Heath and Company where he learned the sheet metal trade. The company moved to Denton, and the Tate family moved here in 1970. Al continued to work for Millard Heath until he started his own sheet metal shop in 1990. He built air conditioning ductwork, living Christmas trees, and miscellaneous metal items such as car parts, non-structural aviation pieces, and whatever the customer needed.
Al was an avid car enthusiast. He watched every Indianapolis 500 and all Nascar and Indy car events he could find. He attended car shows and helped stage a number of them at Mr. Frosty's drive-in restaurant. He built several customized cars of his own and always loved seeing old restored models on the street.
Al is survived by his wife Mary, son Carl Allan Tate and fiancée Sandra Gonzales, and daughter Caren Marie Tate and fiancé Patrick Martinez all of Denton, sisters Diane Cochran of Niles, Michigan and Molly and Bob Shaffer of Dowagiac, Michigan, and several nephews and nieces.
