Anita Dupree Rainey passed away on September 14, 2014, in Denton. Anita was born in Dallas, Texas, to John C. and Martha "Mattie" Mayfield Dupree on January 23, 1922. She was the seventh of eleven children, two brothers and eight sisters.
At the age of 9, Anita and her family moved to a farm in Denton County. She attended Shiloh Baptist Church and Double Oak School in Bartonville where she played basketball. She was always the shortest player and a fast runner. Her dad called her "Skeeter", a name that she did not like at the time. She lived in and around Denton since 1948.
Anita married Wilton H. "W.H." Rainey on October 27, 1955. She loved to sew, cook, read and care for her family. Anita and W.H. had many friends with which they loved to travel, go dancing and eat out with on Saturday nights.
Anita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers James Dupree and Clinton Dupree, sisters Bennie Darlington, Mozelle Stringfellow, Helen Meaders Barnett, Laverne Sams, Glendola Beasley, Laura Pickens and Maxine Calvert, daughter-in-law Lynn Briggs, and son-in- law Erceal Doty.
She is survived by sons Ernest T. Briggs of Denton, Terry R. Rainey and wife Jerri of Denton; daughters Julie Doty of Denton, Sue Aldag and husband Virgil of Corinth, TX; sister Bobbie Lowry and husband Jay of Denton; brother-in-law Wayne Calvert of Denton; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at DeBerry Funeral Home, 2025 W. University Dr., Denton, Texas from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 17th prior to the service at 2:00 pm at DeBerry Chapel with Virgil Aldag officiating. Interment will follow at Cooper Creek Cemetery in Denton.
