IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arne Leif
Ingvar Apeland
July 25, 1937 – September 6, 2022
Arne Leif Ingvar Apeland passed away in Denton, Texas on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at the age of 85. He was born in Skudenes, Norway to Gabriel and Alma Apeland on July 25, 1937.
Growing up on the island of Karmøy, one of Arne's earliest memories was the day Norway was invaded by the Germans. He remembered standing on their back porch holding his mother's hand as she looked out at the North Sea waiting for his father to return home from fishing.
Arne joined the Norwegian Merchant Marines after he finished his schooling. Arne loved to tell stories about his travels including going through the Panama Canal to Chile. One of his funniest stories from this time was when he purchased a monkey while at port. As soon as he brought the monkey onboard, the monkey scurried back down to the dock where his owner was waiting for him.
Arne immigrated to the United States in January 1957. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in November 1957. He was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base where he served until 1961 and then was in the inactive reserves until 1963. He retired in 1996 as a conductor on the Burlington Northern Railroad after 33 years of service. He and his wife Cathy married in 1986.
Arne and Cathy were full-time RVers between 2003-2015. During their travels, they created close friendships with other RVers in Fredericksburg & Bandera areas. He was a genealogist enthusiast and loved investigating the history of the family. Arne was known to research the lineage of anyone marrying into the family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel and Alma Apeland of Skudenes, Norway, and brother Ola Apeland of Skedsmokorset, Norway.
Arne is survived by his wife Cathy Apeland; children Randall Apeland of Amarillo, TX, Dana Apeland Reding of Denison, TX, Ryan Apeland of The Colony, TX, and Kari Apeland Iyer and husband Parmesh of Carrolton, TX; grandchildren Erric Apeland and wife Tabitha of Virginia Beach, VA, Carol Ray and husband Matt of Flatonia, TX, Aaron Christopher Apeland of Amarillo, TX, Kelsey Wilson and husband Laramy of Allen, OK, Kristen Cady and husband Hunter of Seymour, MO, Kaley Caskey and husband Ty of Whitewright, TX, and Leena Iyer of Carrolton, TX; great grandchildren Landon Apeland, Brayden Ray, Aubrey Apeland, Sadie Wilson, Bodie Wilson, Stetson Caskey, and Ogden Cady; brother Gunner Apeland and wife Herdis of Sørumsand, Norway; and many nieces and nephews.
Arne lived a long productive life. If he were to read this, all he would say would be "Lord love a duck!"
A celebration of Arne's life will be held at a yet to be determined date.
