Audrey Ann (Weiler) Scheitel the wife of the late Neal Scheitel of Aubrey, died on May 4, 2015, at Aubrey,Texas. She was born on June 19, 1929, at Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of Valentine and Alice (Finnigan) Weiler of Lincoln, Nebraska. She spent her childhood in Lincoln, Nebraska, attended and graduated from Cathedral High School in Lincoln in 1947. She graduated from Saint Scholastica in Atchinson, Kansas.
After graduation she, went to work at American Bus Lines in Lincoln, Nebraska. While working there, she met her future husband, Neal Scheitel, of Falls City. They went on their first date in November 1949 at the Cornhusker Cafe
Neal was a Korean war-era Veteran. On July 2, 1951, Neal was sent to Yuma, Arizona where he was a finance clerk and a construction rigger in the 412th Engineering Construction Battalion. He helped build roads and hangers for the Yuma Test Station, with the U.S. Army, 412th Army Construction Engineers.
Audrey married Neal on December 22, 1951 at the Saint Mary's Cathedral in n Lincoln, Nebraska, with a breakfast before, and a reception afterward. At 5:00 pm, they drove to Omaha, Nebraska, and stayed at the Blackstone Hotel, which was "the place to stay." They drove back to Lincoln to have Christmas with their families. When they left for Yuma, Arizona, Neal was driving his 1949 Ford. They picked up some of Neal's army buddies in Kansas on their way through heading to Albuquerque, where they celebrated New Years
In early December 1952, Neal put Audrey on a train out of San Francisco to Lincoln, Nebraska. She was pregnant with their first child. On December 16, 1952, Neal was released from active duty, and he drove home to Lincoln, Nebraska to once again be with Audrey. Audrey's first two daughters, Nancy and Connie were born, while they were living in Lincoln, Nebraska.
In 1955, Audrey and Neal moved with the family to Dallas, Texas, when American Bus Lines merged with Continental Trailways. She made a home for them in Dallas, where their third daughter, Kerry was born.
In 1966, she packed up the family when Neal went to work for Western Sales Limited, and moved with the family to the company office in Geneva, Switzerland for an 18 month stay. The move actually lasted for 21 years. Western sales later became the Overseas Inns Inc. She was an active member of the American Women's Club in Geneva.
In 1971, she helped move the family again, this time to the country of Luxembourg, when Overseas Inns changed locations. The company operated hotel properties in Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany and Spain, and built Continental Trailway buses in Belgium, to be shipped to the U.S. While in Luxembourg she raised their daughters and, traveled with Neal on business trips. Audrey, was a member, and President for a year, of the American Women's Club of Luxembourg. She served as the chairperson for the American Booth at the annual International Bazaar, and was famous for her chili. She was also a member of the Luxembourg Sewing Circle, fondly referred to by all as "The Supreme Court."
While in Luxembourg, Audrey was an avid supporter of the U.S. Marine Guard Detachment at the American Embassy, and "Mom" to all the Marines stationed there. She and Neal also formed a social group in the country of Luxembourg, fondly referred to as the "Luxembourg Cowboys." They later named their ranch in Texas the "LC Ranch" in honor of the group, many of whom would travel to Texas over the past years to visit them there.
After Neal retired, they split time between their home in Luxembourg, and a place in Bozeman, Montana. In 1987 they moved to a ranch in Aubrey, Texas.
She loved to play bridge, do needlepoint, and travel to visit with family and friends.
Once in the Denton area, Audrey, was an avid bridge player with the Denton Newcomers and numerous other groups on a weekly basis. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception church in Denton.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents Valentine & Alice, two sisters Barbara (Weiler) McQuaid and Darlene (Weiler) Thompson, and her husband, Neal Scheitel. She is survived by her daughters Nancy (Scheitel) Moore (Steve), Connie (Scheitel) Pelphrey, Kerry (Scheitel) Johnson (Andrew W.); Grandchildren Tara (Vandiver) Robertson (Mark), Sean Pelphrey, Vanessa (Vandiver) Anspach (Michael), Jessica Pelphrey, Andrew N. Johnson (Lauren); Great-Grandchildren Andrew Robertson, Josephine Robertson, Andrew G. Johnson, Cittadini Anspach, Vincenzo Anspach, and Liam Johnson.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 10, 2015 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at DeBerry Funeral Directors. Funeral Mass will be Monday, May 11, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
