IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barbara Jh
Johnson
September 30, 1933 – August 20, 2024
Barbara JH Johnson was born September 30, 1933, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She died August 20, 2024 in Denton, Texas, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Barbara was raised Catholic and remained a devout Catholic her entire life. Her faith was a constant source of comfort to her, and an inspiration to her family.
Barbara graduated from the University of Texas Galveston Medical branch in 1954 and passed her Registered Nurse board exams in December, 1954. She married George L Johnson, Jr in 1954. They moved to Odessa in 1958. She absolutely loved everything about Odessa and was a Permian season ticket holder for many years, well after all her children had graduated.
Our mom was an awesome, fun mom who gave her children the most valuable things you can give them—her love and her time.
She gave us the best childhood-teaching us to how to fly kites and do crafts, teaching us about nature, and giving us her complete support when we wanted to try new things.
She made birthdays and holidays so much fun—even April Fool's Day didn't go unnoticed. Gifts always seemed to be just exactly what we most wanted or needed. Even later in life, she would send little gifts on occasion, that showed her constant thoughtfulness.
Throughout her adult life, Barbara loved to travel, meet new people, and see new things. She travelled extensively through the United States, Mexico, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Her home in Odessa reflected much of the art from those countries in the souvenirs she collected.
Barbara also loved learning and encouraged her family to excel in school. After all her kids were grown, she audited courses at Odessa College and had study groups with friends. She was interested in many things including geology, genealogy, psychology, and religious history.
In her mid to later years, Barbara was heavily involved in many charitable activities, both in her church and the Odessa community, and was a great person to go to if you wanted to organize or raise money for a good cause. She was very involved in the Catholic church, particularly St. Mary's and St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic churches in Odessa. She served in many parish organizations, including the Parish Council and Finance committee, and volunteered at Mass for Lector and as Eucharistic Minister at the Saturday 5 PM Mass for many years. She volunteered with Catholic Charities from 1986-2007, in several capacities.
In the early 80s, Barbara and some friends recognized the need for a food bank and decided to do something about it. Barbara wrote the grant proposals, got the grant, incorporated the Permian Basin Food Bank, and served as its first President and in other capacities from 1983-1988. Another major accomplishment of hers was raising money for a new Girls Club in Odessa, to provide young girls with after school care in a safe place. She was very surprised at the opening ceremony to find that they had named the building after her, "the
Barbara Johnson Human Resources Center" (Although this building has since been repurposed and renamed the Jesus House). Other organizations Barbara was involved with were Partners in Learning and the FEMA Board (9 years including being chairman).
Barbara is survived by her three children and their spouses, Barbara Susan (Sudie) Johnson Rogers (Mark), Jo Anne (Jodie) Johnson Rios (Larry) and George (Jay) Lester Johnson III (Stephanie); eight grandchildren, Robert George Rogers, (Kelly), James Wallace Rogers (Alyssa) and John Mark Rogers (Kami); Roxanne Elizabeth Rios (Kimiko), Phillip Michael Rios, and Carmen Rebecca Rios Eppeland (Michael); George Lester (BJ) Johnson IV, (Kayley) and Lindsey Nicole Johnson King (Jon); and twenty great-grandchildren: Brynn Elise and Olivia Claire Rogers, Robert Bradley and Hannah Leigh Rogers, Ethan Andrew, Levi Adam and Micah Austin Rogers, Isla Grace Eppeland, Natalie Paige Morgan, Emma Michelle, Zoe Lynn, Audrey Nicole, George Lester V (LJ) and Benjamin Douglas Johnson and Paul Michael, Perry Rose, Titus Christian, Alexander Maximus, Silas Kilian and Sophia Noel King.
She was predeceased by her mother and beloved stepfather, Alice E., and R. Ancel Palmer, as well as the father of her children, Dr. George L Johnson, Jr.
Special thanks to the caregivers and staff at Eagle Ridge Alzheimer's Care facility in Denton Texas and Dallas Hospice, for the excellent care they gave our mom.
A funeral Mass was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Denton, Texas. Interment will be at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church in Odessa Texas.
