Bertha Myrtle Kern (Welch), aka Granny Myrt, 97, passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, November 30, 2025, in Sanger, Texas.
Born on January 23, 1928, in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Myrt was the daughter of Bessie Bobb and Julius Welch. She graduated from Ysleta High School in El Paso and went on to earn her bachelor's degree in education from the University of North Texas. Myrt devoted her life to teaching and touched countless young lives through her work as a 3rd- and 4th-grade teacher in the Birdville School District. After many dedicated years in education, she later retired from the University of North Texas in the late 1980s.
Myrt cherished her family deeply. She became Granny Myrt to all!!! She loved getting to know every single person that came into her life.
She is survived by her brother James and sister-in-law Ann Welch of Lampasas, Tx; her daughter Mary Lynne Chapman of Stephenville, Texas; her son David Kern and daughter-in-law Charlsa Kern of Bridgeport, Texas; daughter-in-law Patsy Kern of Valley View, Texas; and her son Matthew Kern and daughter-in-law Debbie Kern of Krum, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren - Jonnie and Chris Roach of Collinsville, Tx; Casey Chapman of Stephenville, Tx; Dean & Tina Kern of Sanger, Tx; Rachel and Chad Corbin of Sanger, Tx; Sharon Kern of Aubrey, Tx; Shelby and Benjamin Venable of Krugerville, Tx; Christine and Blake McDoniel of Azle, Tx; Kaylee Kern of Fort Worth, Tx; Aaron and Brittany Kern of Krum, Tx; and Harley Kern of Krum, Tx. Granny Myrt had so many amazing great-grandchildren, each of whom she loved fiercely.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lynn Benjamin Kern; her sisters Grace Wolfe and Jean Darr; and her son, Michael Kern. Bertha's legacy of faith, strength, and love lives on in all who knew her.
A funeral service will be held at DeBerry Funeral Home, 2025 W University Dr, Denton, TX 76201, on Friday, December 5th, at 10:00 a.m.
