Betty Igo
Duncan Owen
September 21, 1927 – October 5, 2018
Betty Sue Igo Duncan Owen left her earthly loved ones to join her heavenly Father and family to begin her eternal life. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Most of the following was written by her…
Betty Sue Igo was born September 21, 1927, the daughter of Bessie Bledsoe Igo and Homer Henry Igo in Clarksville, TX. She grew up with her three sisters and they were known throughout Clarksville by their rhyming names "Ella Jean, Betty Sue, Billie Mac and Martha Lou". They moved to Hooks, TX during WWII, where she graduated from Hooks High School in 1945 during the closing months of WWII. Shortly after the war she moved to Denton to attend college and has remained here ever since.
Education was of utmost importance to her. She graduated from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Woman's University, with Bachelor of Arts and Master's Degrees in Nutrition. She has provided financial assistance to many and has a scholarship at her TWU alma mater to continue assistance to students in financial need.
On June 3, 1951 she married David William Duncan and her only child, Diane Elizabeth, was born. Their close mother-daughter relationship was cherished by all who knew them.
Betty married James Stanley Owen, her high school and college sweetheart on September 29, 1997. Stan preceded her in death in January of 2005.
Betty revered her family heritage which offered her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was very proud that her Texas roots run deep and was able to easily trace many generations of ancestors living in the same community in Red River County, including her great-great grandfather, Robert S. Hamilton-a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
Betty served as County Home Demonstration Agent in Denton County for 38 years. Her greatest delight was traveling through Denton County working with homemakers and 4-H Club boys and girls.
Upon her retirement, Denton County Judge Vic Burgess declared her retirement day as "Betty Duncan Day." Texas State Representative, Jim Horn, presented to her declarations from both the House of Representatives and State Senate, recognizing her outstanding work with the families of Denton County.
One such example included helping organize the volunteer efforts to distribute the Salk vaccine to Denton County school children when it was first available, in order to prevent the most dreaded disease of polio.
In addition, Betty was a founding member of the Denton Benefit League, SPAN-Meals on Wheels, Denton Hospital Volunteer "Pink Ladies", as well as Denton State School "Foster Grandparents" Program. She was a member and officer of the Denton Garden Club. She loved playing golf at the Denton Country Club, was a charter member of the Women's Golf Association and remained a member of DCC for 48 years including serving on the board of directors.
A strong Christian woman who grew up Methodist, locally attending Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and then Denton Bible Church until her health prevented attending. After that she and Diane watched weekly sermons together each Sunday morning. She left her family a strong moral and ethical compass built on her love of her Lord Jesus Christ, her faith in God and her years of daily Biblical readings.
She is survived by her daughter, Diane Duncan Mayer and son-in-law John Mayer of Denton, TX, one sister Martha Lou "Mot" McMichael of DeKalb, TX, grandchildren Duncan Matthew Igo Mayer, Madeline Marie Mayer, Chris Mayer, Ryan Mayer, Justin Mayer and their families, all of Denton County, as well as a host of nieces and nephews of whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Ella Jean Conway and Billie Mac Wilson, three brothers-in-law Bill McMichael, Ike Conway and Joe H. Wilson, as well as many dear and life-long friends.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful friends and caregivers at Joyful Journey – who truthfully made her last journey full of joy!
