Betty Jo Chumbley Hodge 97, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023, peacefully at home with family by her side. She was born in Navo, TX on September 30, 1925, to George Oliver and Mattie Jane Chumbley. Betty married J.D. Hodge of Denton, TX on October 1, 1943.  She gave birth to their daughter Janice Sue Hodge in January 1947.

She was known by many names, Mom, Aunt Betty, BJ, Betty Jo and Grandmama. Her best quality that is passed down to future generations was family takes care of family.  She was a caregiver to her parents and many others along her journey of life which in turn planted deep roots in family values.  She was a very compassionate woman that would send greeting cards for all occasions and enjoyed writing to add a personal touch.  Music, laughter, sewing, crocheting and sharing time with others were the things that brought her the most joy.  She truly filled each day and lived life to its fullest and remained sharp through her many years.  Her faith and relationship with The Lord was close to her heart as she seldom missed a service on television of any kind and was a member of Church of Christ in Denton, Tx for many years and Church of Christ in Onalaska, Tx the remaining years.  She worked most of her life and in the early years sewed clothing for Russell Newman's for eighteen years, cutting fabric at Wal-mart for another eighteen years.  In between those years Betty and J.D. were commercial fisherman for twenty years in Livingston, Tx while maintaining a residence in Denton, Tx.  She was unique woman and the light in the room when she arrived.  You rarely would find her without the latest fashion, jewelry or a pretty hat on her head.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Janice Sue Hodge Ratliff; granddaughters Shae Christakis and husband Tim, Shawn Mazyn,  grandson Jason Ratliff, and great-grandchildren John Little III and wife Jessica, Julianna Kendrick and husband Zach, Miranda Flores and six great-great-grandchildren.  She leaves behind many other family members, friends, and loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings, son in law Earl Ratliff, granddaughter Mischa Renae Ratliff and great-granddaughter Madison Eve Ratliff.

A visitation will take place at the DeBerry Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 1:00PM followed by a grave side service at 2:00PM at Roselawn Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest. Our family is forever grateful for the support given by family, friends, coworkers and the exceptional compassionate care by Harbor Hospice during this difficult time.
