Carl Marquies "Mark" Wilcox, Jr. was born January 22, 1943 and passed away in his home on November 22, 2015 with his wife at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl M. Wilcox, Sr. and Hazel E. Wilcox. He is survived by his wife, Mary Wilcox; his brother, David Wilcox (Susan) of Bradenton, FL; children Rick Adams, Dena Moore and Kelly Massey, all of Denton, Texas; grandchildren Mandy Rausch, Derek Hilliard and Morgan Moore; and five great-grandchildren.
Mark's father served in the US Army in World War II and later in the Air Force (where he retired as Chief Master Sergeant). Growing up in a military family allowed Mark to live in many parts of the world such as Berlin, Germany, California, Alabama and Florida. He graduated from Lakenheath Dependent High School in England and returned to the United States to attend North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.
Before graduating, Mark enlisted in the US Army in 1967 and graduated from Officer Candidate School that same year as a Second Lieutenant artillery officer. He served with honor and distinction and did a tour of duty in Vietnam from February 1968 to February 1969. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in 1969. After leaving Vietnam, he was assigned to Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii where he was promoted to the rank of Captain. He completed his army service in 1970 and returned to Denton to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Social Science at North Texas State University in 1973.
Mark married his wife Mary on June 8, 1975 in Bradenton, Florida and went on to teach history at Palacios High School (Palacios, Texas) for 20 years. After retiring, Mark and Mary returned to Denton so they could be closer to their family. He was active in his local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America and an avid historian.
There will be a visitation and viewing at DeBerry Funeral Directors (2025 West University Drive, Denton, TX) on Monday, November 30th from 5pm-7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Mark Wilcox to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 920 scholarship fund.
