Catherine Marie Pennell, born on February 17, 1940, in Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, in Corinth, Texas, after a courageous ten-year battle with dementia. She was a beacon of grace and kindness, whose unwavering dedication to her family, profession, and community defined her remarkable life.
Catherine embarked on a fulfilling career as a registered nurse, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Texas Women’s University. Her early years in nursing saw her working diligently at Parkland Hospital in the special care nursery unit, where she tended to the tiniest of patients with loving care. After starting her own family, she devoted 15 years to being a homemaker, nurturing her children and creating a warm and loving environment. Later, she returned to her nursing career, this time focusing on private practice in dermatology, seamlessly blending her professional aspirations with her commitment to her family.
A dedicated member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, TX, Catherine poured her heart into the church community. She actively participated in numerous church activities, embodying the spirit of service. For over 20 years, she was involved with the Meals on Wheels program of Denton, dedicating eight years as the director, ensuring that countless individuals received the nourishment and support they needed. Additionally, her compassionate spirit was evident through her knitting, as she crafted countless scarves for local homeless shelters, senior citizens, and loved ones, spreading warmth and comfort wherever she could.
Catherine was not only a devoted wife to her husband, Floyd Edison Pennell, with whom she shared 65 years of marriage, but also a cherished mother and grandmother. She adored her daughter Ann Marie Bartek and her son-in-law Monte James Bartek and took immense joy in her role as a grandmother to Dori Bartek, James Bartek, Libbie Bartek, Cora Bartek, Katherine Bartek, and Isabel Bartek. Catherine treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren, whether playing games or reading together, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love.
Catherine is preceded in death by her mother, Mary Washington Hatch; her father, Claude William Hibbetts; and her son, Guy Edison Pennell. Their absence is deeply felt, yet her legacy of care, leadership, and humor remains an enduring part of her family’s lives.
She was admired for her poise, grace, and her ability to bring out the best in those around her, setting high expectations while also fostering a sense of humor that brought joy and laughter to gatherings of family and friends. Her presence was a comfort to many, and her impact on the community will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.
A funeral service to honor Catherine's beautiful life will be held on January 19, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, located at 300 West Oak Street, Denton, Texas, 76201.
