Obituary

Charles Nathaniel Davis, III was born on February 6, 1947 to Charles Nathaniel Davis, Jr. and Julia Godwin Davis in the old Denton Hospital on South Locust Street in Denton, Texas. He took his last breath on earth on May 20, 2025 with his wife at his side. A graduate of Denton High School in 1965, he married his high school sweetheart Lynn Noles on August 26, 1967. They celebrated their 57th anniversary last August.

Charlie graduated from Denton High School in 1965, and was proud to play on the first Bronco football team to beat Highland Park in 33 years. Some of his dearest friends are from the class of '65 and he enjoyed helping plan their 60 year class reunion coming up in August 2025. Any who knew Charlie can understand why he was voted "Friendliest Boy" at Denton High in his senior year.

As a child, Charlie began working at Denton Concrete Company/Davis Brothers Contractors owned by his dad and uncle, and worked there until finishing his degree at North Texas State University in 1972. Throughout those many years, he acquired a variety of skills, including operating heavy equipment, designing and building plants, aggregate & materials production and operation, and early pre-cast concrete production and construction. In the early 80s, he and his two brothers bought the company from their dad when he retired. With invaluable assistance of long-time employees, including Denney Dodd and others, the company expanded to include 13 ready mix plants, 4 aggregate production facilities and supplied concrete and materials for large projects such as construction of the Peterbilt plant, the UNT Coliseum, the Lake Ray Roberts dam, and multiple phases of Interstate 35 in Texas and Oklahoma.

After Davis Concrete Company was sold to Gifford-Hill in 1986, Charlie was able to fulfill a life long dream in aviation when hired by Braniff Airlines where he flew as co-pilot on Boeing 727s for four years. Afterward, he returned to the heavy equipment industry selling Link-Belt cranes and hydraulic excavators. In 2010, Charlie and his brother-in-law Jud Sherman founded D&S Engineering Labs which was later sold and the name changed to GeoTex Engineering where many of their original employees and engineers are still employed.

Having trusted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Charlie was always quick to give God praise and glory for the many blessings in his life. As young marrieds, Charlie and Lynn joined First Baptist Church-Denton in 1972. He served on an early mission trip to Canada building churches and enjoyed singing in the church choir and men's ensembles for a number of years. For several decades, Charlie and Lynn greeted at the church entrance to the children's areas for multiple generations of families. They also supported an orphanage in Haiti and helped redesign and install several generator sets there throughout many years. He was on the original security team at First Denton and was the pastor's personal bodyguard for a number of years. Charlie served on the leadership team with John Pearce for the construction of the new BSM at UNT. Due to illness in recent years, he was elevated to Deacon Emeritus at First Denton.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, sister Diana Davis, beloved parents-in-law Nat and Frances Noles, and niece Bethany Davis. Grieving his loss with his wife Lynn are his daughter Piper Davis, her wife Christy Hansel, grandchildren Harris, Greyson and Carter Davis Hansel (all of Denton); siblings Mike Davis and wife Kathy of Denison, Pat Sherman and husband Jud of Denton, Don Davis of Grapevine, and sister-in-law Sue Davis of Keller, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
