Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Ray Holbert, age 83, on February 14, 2025. Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose legacy will live on through his family and the many lives he touched.

Born on March 17, 1941, Charles dedicated his life to his family and his work in the automotive industry. He was the proud owner of Holbert-Wyatt Volkswagen-Mazda, which he opened in 1977, and later owned Downtown Motors, where he spent 26 years serving the Denton community. Charles also served as President of Denton New Car Dealers and was a dedicated member of the Texas Auto Dealers Association, earning the respect of his peers and contributing to the growth of the local automotive market.

Charles was married to Penelope, his high school sweetheart, for 64 wonderful years. Together, they raised three children: Holly, David, and Susannah. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Paul Hamilton, and daughter-in-law, Stacie Holbert  who were like family to him in every way, sharing in his love for family and the values he held dear. He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Ashley, Josh, Emily, Autumn and her husband Jake, Grant, Jess, Grayson, and Vivian, as well as his great-grandchildren: Sam and Eli. He also leaves behind his nieces, Kim, Sara, Libby, Amy, and Susan and one nephew Mike. He was preceded in death by his parents W.L. and Ruby Holbert and his sister and brother-in-law Nelda and Al Hovden, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Georgia and Ollie Whittern and though he will be dearly missed, his memory will live on through his family.

In his personal life, Charles found great joy in spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid golfer, and many cherished memories were made on the golf course, where he shared countless rounds with his loved ones. Charles also took immense pride in attending and watching his grandchildren's sporting events, cheering on the Big Green and seeing his grandson's first collegiate touchdown, always encouraging them and cheering them on.

Charles Ray Holbert was a devoted family man, a respected businessman, and a true friend to all who knew him. His kindness, work ethic, and love for his family will remain a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes and kindness through our grief. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the Denton Public School Foundation , as the family is planning to dedicate a scholarship in his honor, as all his children and grandchildren are graduates from the school district. Additionally, donations can be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital.

At the request of Charles there will be no service, however, the family will celebrate his life with a celebration at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, Texas, Sunday, February 23, 2025 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Oakmont serves as the center of many fond memories for our family. We hope you will join us to share fond memories of daddy.
