IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Delbert J.
Goins
December 3, 1933 – February 15, 2018
Delbert J. Goins died peacefully at Avalon Memory Care home in Carrollton on 15 February 2018 at the age of 84 years 2 months.
Delbert is survived by his sister, Mildred Harrison of Dallas, Texas; his sister Sarah Laguna of Metairie, Louisiana; his son Myron J. Goins of Flower Mound, Texas; his son Ben Taylor of Conway, Arkansas; his three loving nieces and three nephews, and seven grandchildren residing in Texas and Arkansas; and one great grandson, Owen Luke Hutson of McKinney. He is preceded in death by his sister, Helen Goins of Dallas, Texas. He often remarked that no man ever had better or more godly brothers-in-law, Al Laguna of Metairie who passed about ten years ago, and Bobby G. Harrison who resides in Dallas with Delbert's sister Mildred.
A fourth generation Texan, Delbert was born on 3 December 1933 near Vernon, Texas to faithful Christian parents Claude Miller and Sarah Stella Packer Goins. He graduated from Adamson High School in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas in 1951 whereupon he studied Bible at Abilene Christian College. He married Catherine Rheinfeldt of Oak Cliff in 1954 while working for New York Life Insurance in Dallas. He began preaching part-time for small congregations in Texas such as Elam Road, Caddo Mills, Golden, and Alba. The family moved to Brownfield, Texas where he preached and commuted to attend the Sunset School of Preaching under the tutelage of William C. Hatcher. Upon graduation, the family moved to Terre Haute, Indiana to work with the Northside congregation for four years. In 1969, the family moved to Miami, Florida to work with the Miami Gardens congregation for 18 months. From 1970 to 1976, he served as minister and elder of Woodbridge, Virginia congregation.
With the help of a faithful brother in Christ, Jesse Williams, Delbert changed his means of gainful employment to drive for Washington Area Metro where he won national awards as a City Bus "Rodeo" competition driver bringing home the trophy for ole D.C.; and served as a D.C. and Annapolis tour guide, and bus instructor of new trainees for Washington Metro. To the chagrin of his Texas family, he rooted for the George Allen, Joe Gibbs and more recently for the Gruden-led Washington Redskins.
He retired from Metro in 1996, sold his home and moved to the Philippines to join Ted Lingren in teaching the gospel of Christ to local Christian men endeavoring to gain a systematic knowledge of the word of God. He worked closely with the churches of Negros Island including Dumaguete where he worked for about 5 years. Returning to the United States, he worked full-time with the church in Hubbard, Texas until his retirement from preaching in 2010. In early 2018, he completed his book entitled, "Principles of God's Truth" expected to be published later this year. Over these years, by God's grace, he was directly responsible for bringing the saving gospel of Christ to alien sinners some of whom matured and became elders, deacons, Bible class teachers, and soul winners on three continents. He was a member of the North Point congregation, Denton, Texas where he occasionally taught class or brought the invitation of our Lord a few of which were recorded and are archived that may be accessed from the church's web site { www.northpointcoc.com/#!/materials } his last sermon entitled "Happiness."
Delbert formerly served on the Hill County Child Protective Services board where he served as chairman overseeing the needs of orphaned children. He was a financial supporter of many works of evangelism including the work of John Grubb in Taiwan and Robert Veil in rural Maryland. For several years he served as a precinct chairman for the Denton County Republican Party while living in Lewisville. He was a patron of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and local community orchestras of Lewisville.
A memorial service is scheduled to be held at 2 P.M. on Monday, 19 February at the Bill DeBerry Funeral Directors located at 2025 West University, Denton, Texas 76201. Dub McClish of the North Point church of Christ will officiate the ceremony. The family would like to thank the staff at Harris Hospice, Avalon, Lewisville hospital, and Flower Mound hospital for his care. Internment of his ashes will be next to his father, mother and sister at Laurel Land Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas.
