Obituary

Donald Hugh Swafford, 89 yrs, of Ponder, passed away January 21, 2025, in Ponder.  He was born in Justin, Texas, to Hugh Denton Swafford and Alma Irene Moncrief Swafford.  He was a graduate of Ponder High School.

Don married Dollie Jean Coulter on September 29, 1956, in Ponder. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2017, after 60 years of marriage. Don served on many boards in his community, including the Ponder City Council and Planning and Zoning boards from 1999-2008, the Ponder ISD School Board during the 1960's-1970's, the Denton County Cowboy Church Building Committee as well as the Eakin Cemetery Board.  Don was a Rancher and Farmer after having worked at Moore Business Forms for 41 years in Denton, TX.

Visitation and Viewing will be from 2-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Denton County Cowboy Church, 400 Robinson Rd, Ponder, TX 76259. Funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m., after the viewing, with Rev. Jamie McClain officiating. Burial will follow at Eakin Cemetery in Ponder.

Pallbearers will be Don's grandsons: Randy Crider of Ponder, Levi Swafford of Briscoe TX, Brice Swafford of Ponder, Nick Calhoun of Ponder, Ryan Whaley of Birmingham, AL, and Brad Piekarski of Ponder.

Don is survived by a daughter, Donna and husband Rick Crider of Ponder, son, Kelly and wife Kim Swafford of Ponder, sisters, Jo Ella Tidwell of Fort Worth, Carolyn Harrison of Ponder, and Susie Polley of McAllister, OK.  He is survived by 6 grandchildren (Randy and wife Jamie Crider, Lori and husband Brad Piekarski, Melissa and husband Nick Calhoun, Levi Swafford, Audra and husband Ryan Whaley, Brice and wife Ashley Swafford), and 14 great-grandchildren (Tyler Akins, Clay Akins, Sean Akins, Camden Piekarski, Kenzie Crider, Timber Crider, Kaycee Crider, Presley Calhoun, Peyton Calhoun, Parker Calhoun, Ava Whaley, Miles Whaley, Nolan Whaley, and Vivian Swafford).

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Tommy Don Swafford, brother, Burch Swafford and sister, Evelyn Willis.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to go to Eakin Cemetery, P.O. Box 464, Ponder, TX 76259.
