Dr. James W. "Bill" Estes

Dr. James W. Estes, lovingly known to all as Bill, passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior with the same quiet strength, faith, and purpose that defined his life. A devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather, mentor, coach, and educator, Bill lived a life of service—using his God-given gifts to shape young lives on the field, in the classroom, and through the church.

Raised in Denton, Texas, Bill distinguished himself early as a National Merit Scholar, a leader, and an athlete. He graduated from Denton High School, Class of 1964, where he also served as Captain of the football team, setting an example of discipline, humility, and teamwork that would mark his entire life.

Bill continued his education at the University of North Texas, earning both his Bachelor’s degree (1968) and Master’s degree in Psychology (1970). His passion for understanding and developing young people led him to Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College, where he completed his Doctorate in Sport Psychology in 1974.

His professional journey reflected a rare blend of faith, athletics, and administration. After Dallas Baptist University transitioned from a 2-year junior college to a 4-year college, Bill made history as the baseball coach who led the team to an NAIA Area championship victory, helping lay the foundation for a program built on character and excellence. He later served as baseball coach at Belmont University, continuing to mentor student-athletes both on and off the field.

Deeply committed to his Christian faith, Bill served the Sunday School Board, where he wrote youth Sunday School curriculum and later authored a book of poetry, reflecting a thoughtful, prayerful heart devoted to nurturing spiritual growth in others.

At Grand Canyon University, Bill served with distinction as Athletic Director and color announcer, celebrating the university’s two national championships while building programs grounded in integrity and Christ-centered leadership. His career also included meaningful service at the University of South Florida and the University of North Texas, where he was Director of Development.

For more than 20 years, Bill faithfully served Texas A&M University as Regional Director of Development, forming lasting relationships and advancing the mission of higher education. He later concluded his distinguished administrative career as Vice President at the University of West Georgia, leaving behind a legacy of vision, wisdom, and servant leadership.

Closer to home, Bill found great joy coaching Denton Little League baseball teams and serving as a league umpire, investing time and love into the lives of young athletes—many of whom remember him not just as a coach, but as a role model and encourager.

One of Bill’s favorite stories—and a testament to God’s providence—was how his parents met at Glorieta Student Week, during a talent show audition. His mother, an incoming freshman, was singing “Honey Bun,” and that moment marked the beginning of a family legacy rooted in faith, music, joy, and service to others.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Jenny Estes; his son, Todd Estes and his wife, Rachel; his daughter, Brooke (Estes) Arellano, and her husband, Derrick; and his five cherished grandchildren, Anson Arellano, Alayna Arellano, Patrick Estes, Katelyn Estes, and Jillian Estes, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Estes, and by his brother, Robert “Bob” Estes, and Bob’s wife, Marcia Estes. In faith and hope, the family takes comfort in knowing that Bill now rejoins them in Heaven, restored and whole, in the presence of Christ.

Above all his accomplishments, Bill was a man who loved the Lord. His life reflected the truth of 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Those who knew him were blessed by his wisdom, gentle humor, steadfast character, and unwavering commitment to Christ.

Serving as pallbearers will be Anson Arellano, grandson; Derrick Arellano, son-in-law; Patrick Estes, grandson; Todd Estes, son; Tim Farrell, brother-in-law; and John Thompkins, lifelong friend and brother in Christ.
