Obituary

Eleanor Watson Welde, 91, formerly of DuBoistown, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, November 14, 2022, in Denton, Texas, her home for the last three years.

Eleanor was born in Louisville, Kentucky on November 29, 1930, to Orville and Elsie Watson. Growing up in Collingswood, New Jersey, Eleanor helped in her mother's maternity hospital, once delivering a baby by herself while still in high school. She met Richard (Dick) Welde, her future husband, in German class at Washington College. They married on March 17, 1951. Eleanor later graduated with a degree in chemistry from Western Maryland College after which she worked for Penniman & Browne and Monsanto.

She and Dick lived in several places including Baltimore, MD, Norfolk, VA, and Reading, PA before settling in DuBoistown in 1966. Eleanor worked in the quality control lab at Tetley Tea, from 1977 to 1995, receiving the company's President's Award for Excellence in 1991.

A long-time active member of DuBoistown United Methodist Church, Eleanor taught Sunday School for many years. She and Dick later joined South Williamsport United Methodist Church where they spent most of their retirement years.

Eleanor was active in PTA and was a girl scout leader and camp counselor. She played violin in the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, in area musicals, and in church. She was passionate about horses, finally achieving her dream of owning her first at age 52. She loved trail riding and joined the Williamsport Riding Club, volunteering at and riding in shows and parades. She was an excellent cook and gardener. She also enjoyed hiking, camping, cross country skiing, reading, and traveling with Dick.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Dick, and by her parents and by her brothers, Mickey, and Joe.

Eleanor is survived by her sister, Ginger Thomas, of Pittsburgh, PA and daughters, Carolyn Smith and husband, Steve, of Denton, Texas; Janet Francis of Leesport, Pennsylvania; and Susan Olson and husband, Tom, of Southampton, New Jersey; and grandchildren, Nicholas Olson, Anna Olson, and Sally Francis.

Eleanor will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Dick (a U.S. Navy Veteran), at The Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on November 25, 2022. A memorial service is being planned for late April at South Williamsport United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to South Williamsport United Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice.
