Emma Lou Long Floyd, 94, a life-long Denton resident, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, January 7, 2017.

Mrs. Floyd was born April 29, 1922 , to the late William S. Long and Stella Simmons Long. Her Father, William S. Long , was co-owner of Long and King Grocers , which was located on the historic Denton Square for many years.

For decades, Emma Lou Floyd was a leader in Denton's social and community life , having served as lifetime member and the second president of the Denton Benefit League, a lifetime member and past president of General Ariel Club and the Modern Era Department. She was a charter member of Chi Omega, Alpha Alpha chapter at University of North Texas. She applied and shared her talent and love of decorating serving as President of the housing corporation for Chi Omega, Alpha Alpha Chapter, as well as serving as an Advisor and housing corporation committee member for many years.

After graduating from Denton High School in 1939, Mrs. Floyd earned her BA and MA from University of North Texas , where she studied elementary education and color and design. She subsequently taught at the university and elementary school level.

Her passion for design was perhaps best realized by her incorporation of significant historical elements saved from her husband's family's Queen Anne house, the Schmitz House, built in 1879, and located on Oak Street , into her home she designed and built in 1969.

Her other passions included family, entertaining, needlepoint, traveling, designing, and decorating.

She is survived by her daughter Margaret Floyd Hair, son-in-law Terry Hair, sister Ruth Long Walston, grandchildren Jamie Acton and Matt Burkholder, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Floyd was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Tom T. Floyd, her son, David Floyd, her sister Maryetta Long Griffin, and her half-brother William (Bill) Long.

Her wish to remain in her home was made possible by many years of loving care by Betty Kirven, and her daughter Patricia Adams.  The family would like to acknowledge and thank HomeInstead, notably caregivers Ann, Yolanda, and Mary, as well as Solaris Hospice, for their care and kindness to Mrs. Floyd.

Her love of entertaining and immaculate taste will be missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday January 17, 2017 at 2:30 P.M. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, Texas.
