Ewell Shirley Tonn, 90, of Denton, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015 in Denton after a brief illness. He was born July 16, 1925 in Coahoma, Texas to James Roy Tonn and Vinnie Lois Shirley Tonn. He served in the Navy during WWII, assigned as a pharmacist's mate on Midway Island and at Pearl Harbor. He moved to Denton to attend NTSU in the late 1940s and married Virginia Ruth Meroney of Saint Jo, Texas in 1950 in Denton. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on May 27, 2015.
He earned bachelor and master degrees in Education from North Texas and started teaching industrial arts at Edward H. Cary Junior High in the Dallas Independent School District in 1958. He taught there until 1969 when he took a position as a drafting teacher at Strickland Junior High in Denton. He taught in the Denton Independent School District until his retirement in 1986. He was a talented woodworker and carpenter, a gardener, and a dedicated family man.
During retirement he dedicated much of his time to furthering the Gospel of Jesus Christ, traveling on mission trips to Mexico, South America, and Africa, and regularly preaching on Sunday nights at the Denton County Jail.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 29, 2015 from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Funeral service will be Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. Bruce Conrad will give a message during the service. Burial will follow at the Princeton Cemetery in Princeton, Texas. Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Peter Buchanan, Mark Buchanan, Thomas Buchanan, Caleb Tonn, Clay Tolin, and David LaGrone.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Tonn of Denton; daughters: Joanna Buchanan (and husband Philip) of Villa Park, Illinois and Martha Tonn of Kansas City, Kansas; sons: Stephen Tonn of Denton and Dan Tonn (and wife Linda) of Denton; sister, Pearl McDaniel of Angleton, Texas; brother, Durwood Tonn of Denton; 7 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Jan Farrington and Charlene Hulme, and his brother, Leslie Tonn.
