Frank (Francis
E.) Halstead
February 3, 1930 – January 4, 2017
Frank Halstead (Francis E.) died peacefully surrounded by family on January 4, 2017. He was born February 3, 1930 to Frank W. Halstead and Ida Marie Johnson Halstead in Hebron Township, Illinois.
Graduating from Hebron Community High School in 1948, he then attended Northern Illinois University until inducted into the U.S. Army in September 1951. Upon completing basic training at Ft. Still Oklahoma, he was sent to Japan where he completed additional training. He was then assigned to the Intelligence Division of the 25 th Division Artillery Headquarters Battery located on the front line in Korea where he attained the rank of sergeant. Frank was separated from active duty in June, 1953 and returned to Northern Illinois University to complete his B.S. degree in education in 1954. Frank taught grades 4 th -7 th in Aurora, Illinois for four years. He also completed his Master's degree in 1957 at the University of Colorado with a major in educational administration and minor in counseling.
He met Nadine Deitrich in summer school at the University of Colorado in Boulder and they married in Emporia, Kansas on June 15, 1958. Frank accepted a position as elementary principal in suburban Denver and continued as an administrator in the district for 7 years, before taking a sabbatical leave and receiving an internship position to complete his doctorate at the University of Denver in 1966.
Frank and Nadine had two daughters, Deanna and Pam, while living in Colorado. The family moved to Denton, Texas in August, 1966 where Frank become professor in the College of Education at the University of North Texas. Frank served as chair of educational administration for several years and then chair of the Dept. of Teacher Education & Administration during his final years before retiring in 1996. He was proud to have served as major professor for 23 doctoral students in educational administration during his tenure at UNT.
Since retiring, he served two years as chair of the retired faculty and staff association. Frank and Nadine are long time members of the First United Methodist Church and he served on the church administration board. They have been very active members of the Searchers' Sunday School class and the church travel group (The Trippers) both of which Frank served as president. Frank and Nadine had loved traveling all over the United States and Europe.
Frank is survived by his wife, Nadine, of 58 years of marriage, daughter, Deanna Carpenter and husband, Lance, granddaughter, Faith Carpenter all of Frisco, TX, daughter, Pam Halstead of Carrollton, TX, sister, Betty Domask of Harlingen, TX, brother, Ray Halstead of Pardeville, WI., sister-in-law, Darleen Unger of Virginia Beach, VA., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Halstead and mother, Ida Halstead.
His only granddaughter, Faith Carpenter, has been a great joy since she has been a special part of both grandparents' lives. Frank also counts his two daughters and wife as special blessing for all of their love, support and care over the years. The memories of the wonderful times the family were able to be together will be etched in time forever.
A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary on Wednesday, January 11 th at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church. The Reverend Don Lee will officiate the service with a reception to follow.
