Obituary

After a difficult battle with cancer, Geneva Carol Driskill Smith peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by love, on May 9th, 2024. She was 83 years old.

Carol loved her husband, Tommy Douglas Smith, her high school sweetheart. They were married for 65 years, 2 months, 24 days, and 5 hours. Tommy, and their two children Rhonda and Tiffanie, were the enduring loves of her life.

She was a brave and adventurous woman. A lover of the outdoors, Carol grew huge gardens, camped, wrangled calves, and rode motorcycles. She made a once-in-a-lifetime trip into the upper ranges of the Colorado Rockies on horseback. While frequently afraid, she "did it anyway", the very definition of courage.

She was a lifelong learner and teacher having tutored the man who would become her husband through his senior year of high school. As her daughters went off to college, Carol returned to college herself, graduating with honors. She loved teaching children to recognize letters and to begin to read. She continued to learn, and in the final months of her life, took up bookbinding and art journaling with her daughters.

Carol was a woman of faith and encouragement. Despite battling cancer 3 times, she refused to feel sorry for herself, knowing she was in God's hands. During treatment at the oncology center, she never passed up the opportunity to hearten and reassure others. Carol never lost her sense of humor; she always chose joy.

Carol is survived by her beloved husband, Tommy Smith, and daughters Rhonda (Tom) Sanco and Tiffanie Pepa. She is also survived by four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, 2 brothers, Michael and Gary Driskill, her niece Sherry (Gerald) Brantley who watched their epic love story from the very beginning, and multiple nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Vance and Geneva Driskill, and her sisters MaryAnn Miller and Margene Lamb.

Carol's services will be held at DeBerry Funeral Directors, 2025 W. University Drive, Denton, TX 76201. Her viewing will be held on Sunday, May 19th from 1 pm – 3 pm and funeral services will be held on Monday, May 20th at 1 pm.

Carol was more than a lady; she was a legend.
