Obituary

George Porter Godfrey, II, of Denton, Texas passed away on February 5, 2021 in Denton. He was born in St. Joseph, Michigan on March 3, 1941 to George Porter Godfrey and Estella Jane Lynch, but was raised in Dallas, TX  where he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School.  George attended University of North Texas, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha and graduated with Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences.

George worked as Drug and Alcohol abuse counselor at Gainesville State School, Interventions of Wilmer Hutchins and Valley Hope.

He was a long standing resident of Denton TX and attended St Mark Catholic Church in Argyle.  He served as eucharistic minister and a member of Knights of Columbus

His interests were spiritual reading, working crossword, woodworking, fishing, and hunting

George found great comfort and joy when spending time with family. You would often find him at family gatherings sitting back watching the laughter of his loved ones. George cherished every moment with each of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Barbara Jane Godfrey, his daughters Teresa Godfrey Beckner and Sushanna Jill Lay, his grandchild Joseph Joshua Beckner, and great grandchild Avery Estep.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Joan Peavy Godfrey of Denton, daughters, Tami Godfrey Stinger of Corinth, Tara Godfrey Welch of Denton, son, George Porter Godfrey, III and wife, Dana of Florida, Richard Halleck, III and wife Charlotte of Euless, TX. Waymon Peavy Lay and wife Sarah of Greenville, TX., brother, Willard Tage Godfrey and wife June of Denton, grandchildren, Jennifer Benning, Stephanie Stinger and husband Nicholas Sulouff, Courtnie Welch, Corey Welch, Meghan Estep and husband Matt Estep, Amanda Clipp and husband Scott Clipp, Ashley Godfrey, Kristyl Johnson and husband Garrett Johnson, Karla Routson and husband Mark Routson, Laura Halleck Taylor and husband Clint Taylor, Michael Halleck and wife Ansley Halleck, Emily Halleck, Rachael Lay, Waymon Lay Jr, Haley Teurman-Lay, Cole Teurman-Lay, Noah Lay; and great grandchildren Kinleigh Benning, Kylor Benning, Kennady Benning, Elijah Porter Sulouff, Raegan Sulouff, Corbin Estep, McKenzie Estep, Dylan Estep, Jaxson Estep, Aiden Estep, Quinton Estep, Hayden Clipp, Jackson Clipp, Reese Clipp, Hailey Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Kyndall Johnson, Maddie Johnson, Kennedy Johnson, Matthew Routson, Addison Routson

Donations in honor of George Porter Godfrey, II can be sent to St. Marks Catholic Church 6500 Crawford Rd. Argyle, TX 76226 toward the Building Fund as well as the Wounded Heroes Foundation.

Viewing and visitation will be held at St. Marks Catholic Church in Argyle, Texas from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM on Thursday, February 11, 2021. A rosary will be said following the viewing. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM at the Church. Interment will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton, Texas.
