Obituary

Dr. Gerald Patrick Flanagan was born May 12, 1921 in Ft. Worth Texas to the parents of A.J. and Yvette Flanagan. Spending his childhood years in Ft. Worth, he joined the Navy in 1938. Serving ten years in the US Navy, he spent time on the USS Colorado and was there for the duration of World War II. Putting himself through TCU on the GI Bill, he continued on to the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine, from which he graduated in 1957. Coming back to Texas he practiced in Morton, Texas until 1962.Upon arriving in Denton, Texas, he became Co-owner of the Denton Osteopathic Hospital. During his tenure at the hospital, he along with Dr. Art Wiley, became the first D.O.'s to have privileges at the County (Flow) Memorial Hospital.

In 1973, he opened a private practice with Art Wiley, where they had privileges at all three hospitals in Denton. Gerald was one of the Founding Fathers of Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 1979 he joined TCOM as Associate Professor of Family Medicine and ran the Justin, Texas Clinic. In 1978-79, he also served as the President of Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. He continued to be involved in numerous committees, from Texas State Board of Medical Examiners to several peer review boards covering the state of Texas. He gave countless hours taking care of his patients, teaching medical students, and enhancing the Osteopathic Profession. Gerald maintained his medical license until his death at the age of 90.

As the years went by, Gerald matured with much integrity and humility. He accomplished great things, was a loving father, and through his endeavors, has been an inspiration to many. He is survived by 3 children: Ann Margaret Smith of Midlothian Texas, Gerald Patrick Flanagan ll of New York, Nathan Bradley Flanagan of Denton, Texas; three grandchildren, Hailey Ann Smith, Gavin Patrick Flanagan, Graham Chester Flanagan.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at 10 a.m., with a Memorial Service to follow at 11 a.m., in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton Texas.
