Obituary

Gordon Henry Hutmacher was born January 5, 1934 to Frederick John Hutmacher and Vivian Augustine Langston Whalen in Fort Worth, Texas.  He died on March 10, 2017 in Denton, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones.

Gordon enlisted in the Navy in 1952 and proudly served on board the USS Intrepid in the Mediterranean fleet after being appointed to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. During his enlistment in the Navy, he married Margaret Ann Davidson.

Despite working a full-time job and caring for his family, Gordon attended various universities, for a period of twelve years, including University of Texas and Texas Christian University. Later, he obtained his degree in business from the University of Houston.  This reflected a theme throughout his life of never letting obstacles stand in the way of achieving his goals.

His work ethic was formed early in life, starting at the age of 13, from drugstore delivery boy, to soda jerk, to driving dynamite trucks in the hill country, working with hot lead type at the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and ending up in the Randa Camera Shop. An observant customer offered him a position that would change his life: Gordon was offered a position at the Continental National Bank as a teller.  He stayed with the bank until moving on to work for the Small Business Administration.  He liked dealing with people and opportunities.   After the SBA, he moved to other banks such as Brookhollow National Bank, League City Bank and Trust, as well as others in Texas and Louisiana.

Moving up the banking ladder, he held many titles including vice president, director, senior vice president, and president.  His banking passion led to a love of real estate, where he carried a broker's license for 30 years.

Achievements include:

  • President and CEO of League City Bank and Trust
  • Chair of the Clear Lake Economic Association
  • President of the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce
  • Small Business Advocate of the Year – SW Texas District of SBA
  • Commodore of the Jean Lafitte Cruising Association
  • Clear Lake Lunar Rendezvous King

His hobbies included tennis, racquet ball (preferring opponents with ankle sprains,) and sailing. He built a 9' kit boat in his garage.  His love of sailing increased with much larger boats ending up with his 30' Catalina Chocolate Moose.

Some of his unusual experiences included chasing a bank robber, flying the Space Shuttle simulator, weathering an epic hurricane in the mid-Atlantic aboard the Intrepid, and scaling the summit of an active volcano and peering into the molten depths below.

He loved travel and visited Paris numerous times including attending the Paris Air Show.  He loved traveling by RV to all points of the United States visiting his favorite places: Washington State, Estes Park, Big Bend, and Yellowstone National Park.

The best example of Gordon's fighting spirit was demonstrated daily during his seven-year battle with cancer.  He fought long and hard.  When the options were limited he stated, "Let's make the most of it."

Few people knew he was Irish.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 33 years, Katherine Morgan Hutmacher, his sister Darlene McNeil, three children: Thomas Paul, Shari Ann, and Gregory Winston, and their spouses Esthela, Timothy, and Christine.  He has four grandchildren: Anne, Eric, Brian, and Emily plus great grandchildren Georgia, Grant, Carolina, and Hannah.
