Obituary

Hazel Hathorn Copp (Granny) joined her heavenly family on February 27, 2017. Hazel was 106 years young at the time of her passing a resident at The Vintage Senior Care in Denton.

Hazel was born on June 14, 1910 in Red Oak, Texas. The eldest of seven children born to James Jefferson Hathorn and Alma D. Windham Hathorn. Hazel attended North Texas State University before marrying Burdett F. Copp in 1935. Hazel and Burdett were blessed with four children.

Hazel was an active resident of the Denton County Community for many years living in Justin and Krum raising her family and assisting Burdett with his farming, ranching and harvesting operations. Her life spanned positions as a book keeper, postal employee, election judge, Craft Department Judge for 30 years at the North Texas Fair, Lifetime member of the P.T.A., Texas Farmers Union member and the Red Hat Society.  A member of the Krum Church of Christ, she loved her church and spent many hours teaching children's and women's Bible study classes. Hazel enjoyed reading and studying the Bible. The word of God was her comfort in troubled times. In her later years she enjoyed reading, crocheting, bingo and visiting with friends and family.

Hazel is survived by Margaret and Bill Crawford of Denton, Cynthia Copp of Spearman, Dee and Gail Johnson of Krum, ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, two great great granddaughter, numerous nephews, nieces, extended family and a host of friends, special friends and companions, Wilma Herring and Melvin Smith.

Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, James and Alma Hathorn, husband, Burdett F. Copp, children Carol Ann Copp, Gerald Ray Copp, Jary B. Copp, Linda Copp Marshall, three brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be Friday March 3, 2017 from 6-8 P.M. Funeral services will be March 4, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. with Jim Chism and Dary Shelton officiating.  Both will be held at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, Texas.  Burial will follow at Justin Cemetery in Justin, Texas. Pallbearers will be Keith Copp, Kraig Copp, Kevin Marshall, Jarrett Goss, David Hayes and Matt Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be James Reed, Dary Shelton, Jim Chism, Bill Crawford, Jimmy Martin and Melvin Smith. In lieu of flowers Hazel's request that donations be made to the Krum Church of Christ.
