IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen Catherine
Bryan
March 18, 1924 – October 22, 2017
Helen Catherine (Buckley) Bryan of Denton passed away on October 22, 2017. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 18, 1924 to James Patrick Buckley and Marie Catherine (Farr) Buckley. She was the middle child among three daughters. Her father died when she was nine years old.
Helen graduated from high school in January of 1943 and then went to work at a war plant where she riveted bomb bay doors. When the war was over she went to work at U.S. Rubber making tires, where she met her husband, Ray Bryan.
Although Ray had been discharged from the U.S. Army when the war was over he soon reenlisted in the Army and on his first 30 day leave Ray and Helen married on October 19, 1946. Their children include a daughter, Patricia Ellen born in Detroit in 1947. In 1948, Helen travelled to Yokohama, Japan to join Ray in the occupation force where another daughter, Barbara was born. IN 1951, after being transferred to Leavenworth, Kansas their son, Howard was born. Ray was soon discharged, and they moved back to Detroit where twin daughters , Katherine and Kathleen, were born. In the late 1950's Ray, Helen and their family became active members of the Trenton Church of Christ where they were challenged and chose to be missionaries. Ray and Helen lived in the Philippines until 1994 where they retired to Denton, Texas and became members of Krum Church of Christ.
Helen loved the partnership she and Ray enjoyed while serving in the Philippines. Her duties were varied – from helping with visas, typing newsletters, teaching women and children's classes – she was known by people all across the globe as a gracious and kind hostess. Ray passed this life in August of 1996, 3 months short of their 50 th wedding anniversary. Helen worked with Meals on Wheels, carpooled grandchildren to school, enjoyed making crocheted blankets and has enjoyed time with her 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Helen remained in the family home until 2013 when she moved to The Vintage Retirement Community.
She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Francis of Denton, Katherine Malmberg of Denton, Barbara Hays of Ohio and Patricia Miller of Colorado, son, Howard Bryan of El Paso, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Ray, her mother and father and two sisters, Margarete and Delores Buckley.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 9-10:00 AM at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, Texas. Services will follow in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton.
