IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen Elizabeth
Scott
November 11, 1930 – June 21, 2023
Helen Elizabeth Scott, 92, of Oak Point, Texas, passed away in Denton, Texas on June 21, 2023. She was born in DeRidder, Louisiana, on November 11, 1930, to Sidney and Mamie Davezan. Helen and her younger brother Sidney Jr. lost their mother at a young age and were raised by their paternal grandparents, Gabriel and Pearl Davezan.
In 1948, Helen's father brought her to Los Angeles, where he was working. It was in his apartment building that she would meet Clarence Scott, who had recently served in the U.S. Air Force. They married in Yuma, AZ in 1950 and would go on to make their home in Los Angeles and begin their careers.
Helen attended nursing school and became an LVN. Her natural gifts of organization, leadership, and compassion made her an ideal match for this noble vocation. She began as an OR nurse but quickly transferred to Obstetrics, where she faithfully served patients and their new babies until she retired in 1979.
Like her grandparents who owned a local DeRidder cafe, Helen was graced with an entrepreneurial spirit. In the early 1970s, she became a fashion consultant for a women's clothing company. She had great success in this endeavor and won several sales awards.
After she lost her husband in 1980, she discovered she had a talent for art. Her ceramic creations were featured at several shows and became a great source of personal expression. In 1984, her business journey took an exciting twist with the opening of Helen's Country Kitchen, a bakery that featured the Creole confections her family was famous for. Her pralines and pecan pies became extremely popular at local festivals and bazaars.
Even with all of her career pursuits and successes, her service to the Kingdom brought her the most joy. She served as a youth ministry leader and stewardess in the Methodist church for several years. After moving to Texas in 2001, she became active in small group ministry and was a devoted member of The Victory Garden Life Team at Covenant Church in Cross Roads. She loved flower and vegetable gardening and spent many enjoyable hours sharing her knowledge and caring for the landscape at the church and at her home.
Ms. Helen, as she was called in Texas, was a no-nonsense kind of lady. She said what she meant...and meant what she said. The consummate prayer warrior, she was gifted as both an intercessor and as a seer. The altar in her bedroom was often covered with the names and needs of those she called out before the Father; it was her honor to do so. She loved the scriptures and was a true worshiper.
A genuine Proverbs 31 woman, Ms. Helen leaves an impactful legacy built on her unwavering faith. She was the ultimate example of a Christian who understood, embraced, and fulfilled their divine assignment. Hers was a life truly well lived!
Ms. Helen is survived by her daughter, Pamela Scott of Oak Point, Texas, brother, Delaney Davezan, of California, granddaughter, Kayla Esquivel, and great-granddaughter, Eden Esquivel of Houston, and several nieces, nephews, and friends. Her husband, Clarence Scott, her daughter, Deborah Cathleen Scott, and her brother, Sidney Davezan, Jr., preceded her in death.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Journey Fellowship Church in Denton, Texas. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton, TX.
