Obituary

Herschel L. Voorhees III, D.O., was born on December 31, 1950 in Denton, Texas to
parents Herschel Leon Voorhees Jr. and Marvel Snowman Voorhees, and sister Linda
Sue Voorhees. Herschel, nicknamed Skip by his family, was a true Dentonite who
resided in his hometown his entire life, minus a couple of years in Greenville and
Groves, until the time of his passing on August 11, 2024.

After graduating from Denton High School, Herschel attended UT-Arlington for a year
before transferring to North Texas State University (now UNT). It was in college that he
met Regina Roden at the Fine Arts Theatre where they both worked. Herschel and
Regina decided within three months of dating that they wanted to get married, a
decision with which the entire family wasn't enthused. Nevertheless, they were married
on June 29, 1973, and despite a prediction that their marriage wouldn't last six months,
they celebrated their 51st anniversary earlier this summer. On their 50th anniversary,
Herschel joked that he waited all that time to be able to say they made it 6 months 100
times over.

Herschel and Regina welcomed their daughter, Kathryn Roden Voorhees in 1977 and
their son, James Marc Voorhees in 1980. Shortly after Marc's arrival, Herschel decided
his true calling was not, in fact, managing a Grandy's restaurant in Greenville, Texas,
but rather practicing medicine. So, he and Regina moved back to Denton, where
Herschel pursued a master's degree at UNT while he applied to attend medical school
at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (now UNT Health Science Center).
Herschel's career in medicine spanned nearly 40 years, with the majority spent at the
UNT Student Health and Wellness Center where he started as a staff physician, later
serving as Chief of Staff, and ultimately serving as the Executive Director. He was so
passionate about practicing medicine and was the fiercest of advocates for his patients.
Herschel was a compassionate person, and a good friend and colleague, but above all,
he was a loving, kind, and devoted husband, father, and Papa. Nothing was more
important to him than his family. He especially loved spending time with his grandkids
attending their games and recitals, hiking, kayaking, and fishing with them in Colorado,
and telling them silly jokes.

Herschel was an avid sports fan who spent years, often frustratingly and fruitlessly,
cheering on the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks, and UNT Mean Green teams. When he
was able, he would cut out of work early during the summer so he and Marc could
watch the Rangers from the outfield bleachers at Arlington Stadium. Needless to say, he
was ecstatic to see the Rangers finally win the World Series last fall.
Being in nature was integral to Herschel's sense of relaxation and peace. Before having
children, he and Regina spent every moment they could camping and exploring
National Parks throughout Colorado, New Mexico, and California. At home, weekends
were spent in their yard gardening and landscaping. After his retirement in 2019,
Herschel ramped up his time working in the yard and spending time with Regina and
family in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. These trips to Colorado, including being
goaded into outrageous hikes by his kids, are what he most looked forward to each
summer.

Herschel is preceded in death by his parents, Herschel L. Voorhees Jr. and Marvel
Snowman Voorhees, and sister Linda Sue Voorhees. He is survived by his wife of 51
years, Regina Roden Voorhees; children, Kathy (and Mike) Dixon and Marc Voorhees;
grandchildren, Michael and Caroline Dixon; and many extended family members and
friends.
