Obituary

Hurston Elvy Battey, 90, went home to be with the lord on July 3, 2015. There will be a private family service held with burial at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Hurston was born in Floydada, Texas on July 12, 1924 to Lloyd and Corda Battey, they moved to Friona, Texas in 1926 where Hurston graduated high school at Friona High School in 1942. After 6 months at Texas Tech, he joined the Air Force and got his wings at Hondo Air Base in January of 1945. After meteorology school in Berkley California and Navigation training, he was stationed at Gowen Air Field in Boise, Idaho. While stationed there, he met Irma Skelton and they were married on October 24, 1945.

Hurston and Irma moved to Lubbock, Texas where he finished Texas Tech in 1948, after living in various cities in Texas, the couple settled in Abilene, Texas in January of 1953. Hurston and Irma had three children, Denise, Rob and Jeanna. Hurston worked for Burrough Adding Machine, Co. in Abilene until 1965. Hurston then worked for Typewriter Sales until he retired in 1990. They moved to Corinth, TX in 2007.

He volunteered with Meals on Wheals and serve the lord as a Deacon at Abilene Bible Church for many years and a member of Gideon's since 1980.

He is survived by his loving wife, Irma Battey, daughters, Denise and her husband Billy Elliston, Jeanna and her husband, Bill Gaines; son, Robert Battey and wife Mary Beth, grandchildren, Cory Elliston, Amber Gibson and Casey Nichols, and 1 great grandson, Brandt Elliston

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Lloyd and Corda Battey, and brother, Keith Battey.
