Colonel (Ret) James G Foley Jr has left this earth to serve The Lord in heaven. Born the oldest son of James and Margaret Foley Sr on November 29th 1939 in Baltimore MD where he was raised. After graduating from Loyola University, Maryland in 1961 Jim entered the United States Army and began a 26 year military career. His many varied military assignments included several command positions (company, battalion and brigade level) and staff positions (Inspector General (2), Artillery Battalion S-3 during combat and G1, 25th Infantry Division).
These assignments took him to such places as Italy, Republic of Vietnam, Korea (not during that war – not that old), Hawaii, Kansas, New York (during this time he completed his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at Fordham University, NY), Louisiana and Oklahoma where he and his family finally retired. Jim’s numerous military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Award (3 clusters) and the Army Commendation medal.
Upon retirement he pursued many different paths primary of which was golf. An accomplished golfer, he and his retired buddies played 36 holes, four days a week and 18 holes on Saturday. Weather was never too hot. He also ran a small golf repair shop out of a workshop built in his garage. During the cold (-30 degrees) winter months, Jim worked ten years for an income tax preparation firm as both a tax preparer and instructor and later held a supervisory position for a US Government office providing the same services. Until his death, he continued to prepare tax returns as a volunteer with the AARP Tax Aide program.
After moving to Texas in 2010, Jim’s golf was limited to 18 holes three or four days a week and finally after five eye surgeries had to give up the game. Not one to sit still, he dabbled in candle making and stained glass, but really expanded his sewing prowess. As a volunteer for Denton Bible “Sew to the World” he has sewn over 850 dresses, made an instructional video on how to sew the dress and participated in semi-weekly dress kit making workshops. Most Thursdays he participated in Southmont Baptist Dress A Girl program again sewing dresses and providing some male guidance (Ha! Ha!) to a wonderful group of ladies. Lastly, for his own church, St Mark’s Catholic Church, he participated in the rosary making program, making rosaries up until his death. Jim use to joke that he was covering all bases with volunteering at several different churches.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Joseph Seifert Foley and is survived by his loving and caring wife of 64 years, Carol; three wonderful sons, James III, Kevin and Brian and their wonderful spouses; six precious granddaughters, Sarah, Hannah, McCallie, Blake, Ashton and their spouses, and Francis; and one dynamite grandson, Michael; and lastly, two adorable great-grandboys, Colton and Mason.
