Obituary

James Homer Pennington, 90, of Shady Shores, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 4, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on April 3, 1934, to Mildred Dillon Tunnicliff and James Homer Pennington, Sr. in Texarkana, Texas. He attended Denton schools, involved in track, basketball, and football, graduating with the Denton High School Class of 1951. After attending North Texas Teachers College, he married Barbara Elizabeth Galbraith on September 3, 1954. He served in the United States Army in Germany, returning to the States in 1958. He later served in the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1962.

He and Barbara are charter members of Lake Shore Baptist Church in Lake Dallas, where Homer served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, and served on several committees over their 56 years there, making lifelong friends along the way. After retiring from Purex Corporation after 37 years, he spent more time fishing, which was a long-time hobby. He also began attending garage sales almost every weekend, charting out his course in advance. While bargains were great, what he enjoyed as much, if not more, was meeting people, making new friends, and sharing his finds with others. Whether in church, on the shore visiting with fellow fishermen, or meeting people in his garage sale adventures, he never met a stranger and was a friend to many. He will be greatly missed.

Homer was preceded in death by his father, mother, step-father, and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, his three children; Mike Pennington, Leah Ann Madewell (Mark), and Dean Pennington (Jill). He is also survived by six grandchildren; Jake Madewell (Megan), Nicholas Pennington (Emily), Jenny Marable (Patrick), Lauryn Pennington, Daven Pennington, and Jared Pennington, five great-grandchildren; Isabella, Jaxon, Kenadee, Lincoln, and Rowan. He leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 11, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton.

Funeral services will be held at Lake Shore Baptist Church in Lake Dallas on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 11:00 A.M., with burial to follow at Swisher Cemetery in Lake Dallas.
