Obituary

James John Talatzko, affectionately known as Jim or JT, passed away peacefully at his home in Denton, Texas, on December 5, 2024, at the age of 72. He was surrounded by the love and comfort of his daughters and son-in-law in his final moments.

Born on July 7, 1952, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jim was the beloved son of Lorraine Slawny and Rudolph Talatzko. He grew up in Milwaukee, where he attended St. Matthias Catholic School and proudly played with the St. Matthias Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. At the age of 16, his family moved to Fremont, California, where he graduated from Irvington High School in 1970.

Jim embarked on his professional journey at Peterbilt in Newark, California, during the 1970s. In 1986, his career brought him to Denton, Texas, where he continued working with Peterbilt until 1997. Demonstrating his dedication to personal and professional growth, Jim earned his bachelor's degree from City University of Seattle in 1996. His path later led him to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he joined Volvo Trucks. He eventually took on a consulting role with AGCO, which allowed him to travel extensively throughout Europe and South America. Before retiring in 2012, Jim worked alongside his sister and brother-in-law at Vault Security in Fairfield, California, creating cherished memories in his final professional chapter.

Jim married his high school sweetheart, Linda Cullumber, in 1975. Together they built a life full of memories during their 38 years of marriage. They divorced in 2013. He is survived by his daughters Hillary Castillo (Mando) and Alyssa Talatzko; his treasured grandsons Jace, Cruz, and Dewayne Castillo, all of Denton. He also leaves behind his sister, Ruth Ledford (John); nieces Julie Barton (Brian), Rebecca Cooke (Danny), Jennifer Ledford; nephew John Ledford (Cindy); and many great-nieces and nephews. Jim loved his family fiercely.

Jim was passionate about motorcycles. Some of his fondest moments were riding with friends, despite a near-fatal motorcycle accident in the 1970s that left him with lifelong health challenges. True to his resilient spirit, Jim got back on a bike, reigniting his love for the open road.

After returning to Texas in 2013, Jim became a dedicated member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, serving communion to nursing home residents and joining the Knights of Columbus Ralph Cerny Council. He also enjoyed spending time at the Denton Senior Center and cheering on his grandsons at their sporting events. The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant challenges, but Jim faced them with courage and faith.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lorraine and Rudolph Talatzko.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Argyle, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Knights of Columbus Ralph Cerny Council or United Way of Denton County.
