IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Janice Mobley
Dobbs Newman
November 25, 1929 – July 20, 2024
Janice M. Dobbs Newman, 94 and longtime resident of Denton passed away on Saturday evening, July 20, 2024. She was born on November 25, 1929, in Bayou La Chute, Louisiana to Edwin D. and Esther E. Jackson Mobley.
Jan grew up in Elwood, TX and graduated from Bonham High School in 1947. Her childhood friendships lasted through all the years of her life. She attended the University of North Texas earning her BBA in teaching, the first in her family to earn a college degree. She later worked for UNT for more than 20 years in the Chancellor's office and at her retirement she was the Executive Assistant for the Board of Reagents for the University of North Texas System, including the UNT Health Science Center.
She was active in the First Baptist Church of Denton and loved collecting dolls, making jewelry, and traveling all over the world, especially places of Biblical history. She was very active in her grandchildren's lives and after the first grandchild was born was thereafter know as Precious.
Whether Jan was working in the garden, hunting in the backwoods, organizing an event for the university and socializing in a ballroom with billionaires, she was always articulate and poised. She will be missed.
While in college she met and married Jack A. Dobbs. They celebrated their 50th anniversary just prior to his passing in 2003. Several years later, she married Joe Q. Newman, and they loved traveling with their church seniors' group until she was again widowed in 2018. After his passing, her dementia progressed rapidly.
We extend a special thanks to all her caregivers, especially Dana Wallace, as well those at Bellaire Memory Care and Three Oaks Hospice.
Janice is survived by her sister, Linda Alldredge, her son Clint Dobbs (wife Dawn Shepherd) and daughter Dr. Cindy Kelly (husband David Valdez), all of Denton. She had 8 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, as well as an extended network of stepchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, J.C. and Edwin C. Mobley.
The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors on Sunday from 2-4:00 p.m. for visitation. A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m, Monday, July 29, 2024, in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors with Pastor Sean Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton.
Her family will be having a gathering after the Sunday service.
We request, in lieu of flowers, donations to be made in Jan's honor to Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
