Obituary

Janice Black Nelson, of Denton, was called home to heaven on her 93rd birthday, May 17, 2012 at her home in Denton.

She was born May 17th, 1919 in Temple, Texas to John Palmer and Hattie Mae Black and graduated from Amarillo High School. She went to work as a secretary, and became a lightning-fast typist who still used shorthand until a few weeks ago.

She married Avery Frank Nelson on Jan. 20, 1945. They moved to Denton in 1947 to begin his teaching career at NTSC. In 1950 she graduated magna cum laude from what is now the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Arts.

After her children were grown, she returned to UNT as a secretary to the Biology Department Chairman.

A life-long member of the Baptist faith, she shared her love of Jesus with for years with fourth-grade children and most recently served as the leader of the Encouragers Sunday School class where she prepared weekly lessons. She had the gift of a beautiful voice and loved to play the piano.

After the death of her husband of in 1982, she volunteered with the European Baptist Association to be a missionary in Wiesbaden, Germany for two years.

Janice loved to travel, attended numerous Elder Hostels, enjoyed playing games and cards with her friends, and reading. She was a fascinating, interesting woman who faced life's challenges with grace.

She was well-welcomed into heaven by her Lord, her husband Frank, her parents, brothers, sister, and many friends.

Those left to tell stories and cherish memories are her sons and daughters-in-law Alan and Cathy Nelson of Denton, and Kyle and Norma Nelson of Sanger, and her daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Bill Barnhill of Denton; Grandchildren are Scott and Kim Nelson, Shelley and Chad Rakestraw, Steven Nelson and fiancé Caitlin Ayars, Ashley and Aaron Gentry, Kaylee and Travis Wriston, and Lauren Nelson; 7 great-grandchildren; niece Carol Redman; nephews John and David Black, and Michael Flanagan; FBC's Encouragers Sunday School class, and many close and dear friends.

There will be a visitation from 2-4 pm Sunday afternoon, May 20th, at DeBerry Funeral Home, 2025 W. University Dr. in Denton. At 3:00 pm on Monday, May 21st, we will gather at the First Baptist Church, 1100 Malone St., to celebrate her life. The Rev. Cliff Feeler and Dr. Jeff Williams will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Denton.

Memorials may be made in Janice's name to either the First Baptist Food Pantry or First Baptist Church Missions trips.
