Obituary

Jerome L. Duggan, "Dr. Duggan", died on Sunday, August 31, 2014 in Denton, TX. Dr. Duggan was a Regents Professor at the University of North Texas (UNT) before he retired in 2012 with 39 years of service.

Dr. Duggan was born on August 4, 1933 in Columbus, Ohio. He spent his early years in Columbus and Syracuse, New York and moved with his family to Denison, Texas in 1944. Dr. Duggan was an All-District football player at Denison High School. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from UNT in Physics and Mathematics and received a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in Physics in 1961. His dissertation research was done at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) under an Atomic Energy Commission Graduate Research Fellowship.

Dr. Duggan was an Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia from 1961 to 1963. He then became a staff member at Oak Ridge Associated Universities where he performed research at ORNL and coordinated a program that brought university students from around the country to ORNL to do research. In 1973, Dr. Duggan came to UNT as a professor in the Physics Department. In 1987, Dr. Duggan was awarded the UNT President's Award, the highest award given by the University. He also received a special medal at the 1995 meeting of the Particle Induced X-Ray Emission Conference in Padua, Italy and was made a Fellow in the American Physical Society in 2000. Dr. Duggan published over 200 referenced publications and conference proceedings. What he was most proud of were the 15 Ph.D. students and 20 master degree students that he graduated during his career.

In 1968, Dr. Duggan started the International Conference on the Application of Accelerators in Research and Industry (CAARI) to emphasize the industrial application of particle accelerators. The 23rd CAARI conference was held in May 2014 in San Antonio and Dr. Duggan served as the Conference Chair Emeritus. It was a great honor for him to see the conference grow to 500+ attendees from more than 50 countries.

Dr. Duggan is preceded in death by his parents Joseph E. Duggan and Delorous Sharp Duggan as well as his brother Joseph E. Duggan Jr. He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Bach Duggan and his children– Dane Duggan, Dedra Kalmbach, Denise Duggan and Christy Wallis; sister – Patti Davey; sister-in-law – Jackie Duggan and brother-in-law – Tom Davey; son-in-laws – Bob Kalmbach and Steve Wallis and daughter-in-law – Ellie Bales; six grandchildren – Kela McDonald, Amy Kalmbach, Julia Duggan, Savannah Wallis, Sophie Wallis and Brandon Wallis; numerous nieces and nephews, a large extended family and life-long friends.

A memorial service honoring Dr. Duggan's life is being held on Saturday, September 6th at 10 a.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church in Denton, TX.
