Obituary

Jessie Virginia Crawford Thompson Stiff, 94, of Denton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2016. Granny, as she was affectionately known by her family, was born in Jackson County, WV on Sept 9, 1921. She was the 5th out of 8 children born to John Adam Crawford and Bertha Jackson Crawford.

The family moved to Coolville, OH, where she graduated from Troy-Carthage High School in 1937. When World War II began, Jessie wanted to join the Women's Army Corps but her parents would not allow it. Ever the patriot, she accepted the adventure of a lifetime when she was recruited to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and moved cross-country to Washington, D.C. to work for J. Edgar Hoover in 1942. As a Victory Job recruit, she worked in the fingerprint and evidence collection section of the FBI.

While working in DC, Jessie met and married J. B. Thompson, a handsome Navy man from Texas on November 24, 1945. The newlyweds boarded a train and moved to the wide open spaces of the Texas Panhandle where J.B. joined his brother, Tommy Thompson, at the Sanitary Bakery in Childress, TX.

About 1950, J.B. and Jessie moved to Denton and bought J.B.'s Dairy Bar on Locust St. The Dairy Bar was one of the main teen hangouts in Denton. In the early 60's, they sold the Dairy Bar and bought the Campus Drug Store on Oakland Ave by TWU. In the early 70's, Jessie went to work for Skillern's/Revco/Eckerd's Drugs as the much-loved drug clerk for the pharmacy.

J.B. passed away in 1978. In 1985, Jessie married Guynn Stiff of Denton, who passed away in 1999.

Jessie was an avid reader, enjoyed history, traveling and loved her treasured friends, extended family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She adored cardinals, blue birds and pansies.

She is survived by her children, John Thompson and wife, Susie, of Waxahachie, Jan Foreman, of Corinth, Judy Childers and husband, Robert, of Denton, Jean Ann Harris, of Krum, sister, Mickey Krieger, and husband, Paul, of Grove City, OH, brother, Burl Crawford, and wife, Eloise, of Massillon, OH and grandchildren, Joelle Thompson Perez, Tricia Warnack Snider, Jason Foreman, Katie Foreman Bridges, Sarah Jessica Virginia Thompson, Joshua Harris, Levi Harris and 17 great-grandchildren. Her extended family includes Lela and Rahat Khan of Carrollton and their children Zarah, Omar, and Sofia as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband J.B. Thompson, husband Guynn Stiff, grandson Jake Cameron Thompson and son-in-law, Joe Harris.

Jessie's family would like to thank the staff of Good Samaritan Health Care Center and the Good Samaritan Hospice Society for the love and care they've shown her throughout the past few years.
