Obituary

Jo Ann Rogers passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Denton, Texas, at the age of 94. Jo Ann was born in Prescott, Arkansas, on June 18, 1930, as the first child of Vernie and Elizabeth Meador.

Jo Ann grew up during the Depression, listening to the news on the radio and spending Saturdays at the local matinee. She was an only child and grandchild for the first 11 years of her life. As she grew, she developed a lifelong love for sewing. She was extremely studious and graduated as Salutatorian of her class.

Jo Ann was introduced to Henderson Rogers, Jr. ("H" or "Rog") on a blind date, and after two years, they married. Henderson lovingly nicknamed her "Jody." Their marriage spanned over 67 years, lasting until Rog's passing in 2020. They began their life together in Dallas and moved to Houston in the early 1960s. Together, they shared many interests, including dance club, dinner club, and bridge club, through which they made many lifelong friends. Jody and Henderson also cherished several beloved dogs over the years.

Jody became a devoted mother to her daughters, Kim and Karen, whom she loved dearly. She was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom, dedicating her energy to supporting her daughters. Her contributions included volunteering at their schools, serving as a Campfire leader, dance recital mom, PTA carnival chairwoman, and chauffeur to countless activities. A talented seamstress, she even crafted her daughter's wedding dress, just as she had for her own. Jody was also passionate about gardening and became very involved in The Houston Federation of Garden Clubs, where she served as President. She was highly skilled in shorthand and typing and later became proficient in computer skills.

In retirement, she and Rog stayed busy by participating in various organizations, including an investment club with friends and neighbors. They were also involved in several community programs sponsored by the Houston Police Department, such as Citizens on Patrol and the Houston Citizens Police Academy. They enjoyed being part of the Z Club of Houston and had many adventurous drives through West Texas. Their greatest joy in retirement was spending cherished time with their grandchildren.

Jody is survived by her daughters, Kim (Rick) Brown of Denton, Texas, and Karen (Robert) Bullock of Katy, Texas. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kati Bounds (Billy), Christopher Rogers (Kryssie), Kelsey Rogers, Robert Bullock, Jr. (Olivia), Mackenzie Bullock, Cameron Bullock, and Elizabeth Bullock, as well as ten great-grandchildren. Her siblings include Judy Mattfeld, Vernie B. Meador, Jr. (Jane), Sidney Meador, and James Meador (Leigh Ann).

A Celebration of Life will be held at TWU Butterfly Garden in Denton, Texas on November 9th, 2024 at 2 PM to commemorate and honor the life of Jody followed by a continued celebration at Angelina's Restaurant in Hickory Creek, Texas.  Donations can be made to the TWU Butterfly Garden at https://twu.edu/butterfly-garden/
