Obituary

Joan Elsabeth Jolly, long-suffering member of the Cleveland Browns Dawg Pound, and the world's biggest Barbra Streisand fan, died peacefully in her sleep on August 26th at her home in Krum, Texas, at the age of 69.

She was born in Conneaut, Ohio to Francis and Jean Ann (Benjamin) DeMay on Friday, December 23, 1955; a baby sister to two elder brothers, Robert and Michael. Joan moved to Texas for good in 1981 and maintained a deep love for the Lone Star State, where she lived most of her life, but the small town perched on the shores of Lake Erie would always be home in her heart. Northeast Ohio takes its bowling very seriously, and Joan, with her killer left-hook, won countless trophies as team captain for the Chateau Lounge and struck fear into the hearts of many a roller at Conneaut's El Camp Lanes.

It is often said by those who knew her that Joan never met a stranger. She worked for JCPenney for nearly two decades and forged many lasting friendships with her colleagues there and at the University of North Texas, from which she retired. But as proud as she was of her professional accomplishments, music and passion were always the fashion for Joan, who will likely be best remembered for her annual Fourth of July parties that closed with a mandatory rousing rendition (or three) of Barry Manilow's "Copacabana" as well as her spirited Facebook sparring that ignited more than one lively debate.

To know Joanie is to forever remain in her contacts, lovingly subjected to her random wellness check texts and earnest invitations to come visit "any time." Upon her recent passing, a friend said, "Joanie was the ultimate hostess. She always made everyone feel like family." Anyone who stepped foot inside her home, or merely made her acquaintance, knew this to be true.

Joan is survived by her husband of 32 years, Daniel Jolly; her three children, Reina (Aho) Duerinckx of Dallas, TX, Bobbi Jo Bearce (Niall McGowan) of Market Harborough, England, and Mark Bearce (Jessi Conran) of Anna, TX; brother Michael (Annette) DeMay of Conneaut, OH; sister in-law Barbara (Hathy) DeMay; granddaughter Alexis (Zeferino Ramirez) McArthur of Forestburg, TX; three great-grandchildren, Audriana, Mason, and Austin Ramirez of Forestburg, TX; her cherished nieces and nephews across Ohio, Texas, and Washington state; as well as her many friends and "sisters" whom she considered family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved big brother Robert F. DeMay (2020).

A celebration of Joan's life will be announced and held at a later date.
