Joseph L. (Joe) Mitchell, known as Chief to many, passed away on December 12, 2015 at his home in Denton. He was born in the old Denton Hospital on August 13, 1935 to Joe Lewis and Bernice Boyd Mitchell. He has gone on to be with his beloved son, grandson and other dearly loved family and friends.
He was devoted to his family and is survived by the mother of his children, Carolou Brown Mitchell, his daughter, Lezlie Jo Mitchell Haynes and his son, Charles B. (Chuck) Mitchell and wife Cathy all of Ft. Worth. Also his grandchildren, Jennifer Haynes, Savannah Bruton and Samantha Mitchell and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by infant son, John Boyd Mitchell, grandson, Jordan Richard Haynes and parents.
He had a long career in law enforcement and public administration beginning in 1957. At the time of his death he was still a commissioned Texas Peace Officer. He began his career as a Texas Liquor Control Board Agent, he served as a Special Agent with the U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Marshalls Service, U.S. Treasury Service and the Inspector General's Office.
After retirement, he joined his friend, Weldon Lucas as a Chief Deputy of the Denton County Sheriffs Office from 1993 to 2005. He also served as an administrator at UNT. During this time he also served as Denton's Mayor, Mayor Pro-Tem and Councilman. He was a graduate of NTSU (UNT) and honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines Corps.
He was a longtime member of the Sheriffs Association of Texas. He was a Lay Reader at St. David's Episcopal Church in Denton. He was especially proud of his coaching and participation in Pee Wee, Little League, Boy and Girls Scout activities.
His favorite charities were Scottish Rite Children's Hospital of Dallas, Cook Children's Hospital of Fort Worth, CASA of Denton and the Denton County Child Advocacy Center. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, please make a memorial to one of these organizations.
Funeral services will held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at St. David's Episcopal Church in Denton, Texas at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton.
