Joe Glenn Powell, 62, of Denton passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at his home. Born on August 27, 1951 in Denton to Howard and Bonnie Rowe Powell, he married Angie Reynolds on March 22, 1985 in Denton, Texas. He was the owner of JP's Boot and Saddle Shop.
Born and raised in Denton Texas, Joe graduated from Denton High School in 1969. Father, Husband, Brother, Son, Uncle, Cowboy, Artist, Firefighter, Comedian, Ranch Hand, and President are a few of the many titles he held over his life span. Throughout his life Joe was very active in the rodeo community. He was rarely known to be without a horse and rope chasing his passion for roping steers. Owner and operator of JP's Boot and Saddle Shop for the past 16 years Joe made his living transforming leather in to works of art for others. Joe found his true calling in 2009 when he became President of Texas Cowboys Against Cancer; an organization founded in honor of his sister, Johnnie Neely, which devotes itself to helping those diagnosed with cancer.
Joe is survived by his wife, Angie Powell; son, Jace Powell; mother, Bonnie Owens; sister, Fran Fritz and husband Bobby and sister Cindy Schiller and husband Sam; brother-in-law Tom Neely; niece, Amy Alambar Gatlin and husband Justin; nephew, Ben Crowell and wife Kate and nephew Clint Crowell; mother-in-law Kaye Mitchell; cousins Don Lynch and wife Tonia, Tracy Lynch, and Robert Genova.
Joe is preceded in death by his father, Howard Powell; sisters, Gayla Powell and Johnnie Neely; cousin Rick Genova; aunts Mildred Powell Higginbotham, and Fern Lynch; stepfather, O.D. Owens; and father-in-law, Jerry Dale Mitchell.
Pallbearers will be: Tommy Calvert, Ben Crowell, Jim Griffin, Mike Holtzman, Tracy Lynch, Tom Neely, Sam Voss and David Wilkinson. Honorary Pallbearers include: Weldon Burgoon, Robert Genova, Rick Hagen, and James Tredway.
The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors on Tuesday August 19th from 5:00 pm to 7:00pm for visitation. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday August 20th at 10:00 am at the Denton County Cowboy Church in Ponder. Burial will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Denton.
