John Phillip Goodman

John Phillip Goodman, 88, passed peacefully at home on September 22, 2026, at his desk as he prepared for his day. Born April 7, 1938, in Akron, Ohio. The eldest son of Victor Goodman and Ruth Bender Goodman, John lived a purposeful life centered on hard work, service, family, and the many interests he enjoyed.

John's education began in Akron, Ohio. He was a proud alum of St. Sebastian Parish School, class of 1952. During his high school years, John’s family moved to Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Christ the King and Jesuit College Prep School and later studied Electrical Engineering and Math at Loyola University and the University of Texas at Arlington. He served in the Air Force Reserves from 1961 to 1967 and spent 35 years with Texas Instruments before retiring.

John continued serving others throughout his life. A very devout man. Always active in his local parish, he served as an altar boy for many years and later in life became a ucharist minister. He served as a cub master and den leader in the Boy Scouts of America. After retirement, he volunteered for several years with AARP and the MESA food bank in Houston. He enjoyed being with family and friends and was happiest sharing everyday moments with those he loved.

A lifelong tinkerer and puzzle solver, John enjoyed crossword puzzles, rebuilding old radios and computers, working on his model trains, cooking with family, and trying new recipes. He also enjoyed bicycling, camping, and being outdoors. His determination, practical skills, and generous spirit were evident in all he did.

John called the Houston area home for more than 40 years and lived in Katy for the last 35. Recently, he moved to North Texas to be closer to family.

He is survived by his children: John Goodman, Phillip Goodman, Kathleen Fortenberry, Aimee Westermen, and bonus daughter Maureene Tinney; 13 grandchildren: Sunshine Goodman, Krystle Hutchinson, Stephen Fortenberry, Mark Sierra Jr., Sadie Alvarez, Charles Jones III, Trevor Mills, Brandyn Rose, Jason Mills, Olivia Goodman, Jonathan Goodman, Naomi Goodman, and Robert Tinney III; and 11 great-grandchildren: Zorina Sierra, Zayla Hutchinson, Mahria Sierra, Mark Sierra III, Zoe Fortenberry, Jason Mills Jr., Noah Fox Cashion, Levi Alvarez, Myles Sierra, Malina Sierra, and Leon Alvarez. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jeannette Goodman, and nieces Denise Rebel, Julie Philley, and Debi Goodman. His large, loving family brought him pride and was an important part of his life. His legacy will continue through the many generations who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Victor Goodman; his parents, Victor Goodman and Ruth Catherine Bender Goodman; and his brother, James Michael Goodman.

A Rosary will be recited on Monday, October 5, 2026, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (2255 N. Bonnie Brae St., Denton, TX 76207), followed immediately by Mass from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the home of Kathleen Fortenberry.

John will be remembered for his steady mind, determined spirit, constant curiosity, and the warmth he brought to family gatherings, shared meals, and everyday moments. He leaves behind enduring love, treasured memories, and a family strengthened by his example.
