Obituary

John “Jack” Edward Mahoney, age 90, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025. He was born on October 8, 1935, in Bayonne, New Jersey. When he was eight, his family moved to Rochester, New York. Rochester became the place where he built his life, started his career, and raised his family.

John attended Edison Technical High School, where he learned the printing trade and began his career as a printer apprentice. Through dedication and hard work, he worked his way up in the field. Later, Edison Tech invited him to return as a teacher, where he proudly taught printing to future generations. He retired from Edison Tech as a respected and beloved teacher.

John married Janet October 13, 1956, and together they raised four children. After his second eldest daughter moved to Texas, John and Janet followed four years later, and Texas remained his home for the rest of his life. Janet passed away after 56 years together.

John truly loved life and, above all, loved his family. He was known as a generous man who was always ready to help others. He loved history and was always eager to learn more, never losing his curiosity about the past and the world around him. He also had a deep love of travel and was fortunate to see much of the world, including many memorable trips with his dearest friend, Brenda Horn. John was very proud of his Irish heritage; a pride he carried with him throughout his life.

John is survived by Brenda Horn and by his children: Barbara Mapes; Debra Reichhart and her husband, Lawrence Reichhart; Michael Mahoney; and John Mahoney. He is also survived by his brother, Edward Mahoney, and sister-in-law, Carol Mahoney, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

He leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Natasha Farrell and her husband, Ian Farrell; Brody Mapes; Andrea Reichhart and her husband, Matthew Widick; Bailey Mahonsky and her husband, Justin Mahonsky; Kyle Reichhart and his wife, Emilie Palacios. He is also lovingly remembered by his great-grandchildren: Ryleigh Farrell, Leah Mahonsky, Crosby Farrell, Elliot Widick, Hayden Widick, and Finn Reichhart.

A funeral service will be celebrated at First United Methodist Church of Denton on December 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in Miller Hall.
