IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Doss
Phillips
March 24, 1951 – December 1, 2021
John Doss Phillips of Denton, Texas died peacefully in his bed on December 1, 2021. In the few months since his death his family cannot begin articulating the feelings of grief and gratitude at having known him and his love. To say he is missed is a gross understatement.
He is survived by his two adult children, Jesse Hunter Phillips of Denton and Justis James Phillips of Seattle, WA, three grandchildren Bentley, Tenley, and Thea Phillips, and his siblings Delbert and Gina Gibbs of Dallas.
Doss was an enigma of a man, who always bragged that he was born at a very young age. March 24, 1951, in Atoka, OK to Yvonne Cochran and JD Phillips, to be exact. The eldest of three, Doss was prone to enact singularly confounding antics and pranks that leave psychological imprints on those affected to this day. He could stun you with weirdness.
He graduated from Odessa Permian High School in 1969, got his bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas, and became a Physical Therapist at the University of Texas Medical in Galveston where he made life-long friends and fishing buddies.
On October 18, 1984, he married his soulmate and love Glynnis Ann Keen in Dallas. Together on a small plot of land in Denton, they raised Hunter and Justis in the only home they've ever known whiling running a PT clinic a short walk down the hill from the house. They were happily married until her death in 2012.
Doss was a funny guy, a stoner, a Zen fly-fisherman known for throwing wild, days-long 4th of July parties in the 70's. He learned what boredom was firsthand by spending a freezing winter alone reading science-fiction novels. He could easily be found on the Square, and if you were lucky, he probably smoked you out. Sometimes he'd even get caught walking around with a cocktail he snuck out of the Hickory Street Lounge. He gave 0 f***s and was always adamant about doing his own thing. In fact, Denton County currently has a standing warrant for his arrest.
