Joni Gale Newland Coker peacefully passed away at home surrounded by her family and her dogs on July 26, 2025. She was born in Denton, Texas to Lafayette and Lockadee Newland on May 3, 1960. She was a loving wife, mother, and active member of the community. She served on the Denton County Child Protective Services Board for many years and volunteered at the Denton Animal Shelter. She is preceded in death by her mother, Lockadee Newland.
Joni is survived by her husband of 43 years, Edwin and her children Tate Condren and husband Mike, Peyton Coker and husband Kevin, Cedric Reid, Brooks Coker, Devin Coker, Andrew Coker, and Emery Coker, her father, Lafayette Newland, sister Tobye Blagg, and her two grandchildren.
During her life, Joni and her husband opened their home to provide a safe place for foster children as a foster home and Joni mentored those who had aged out of the foster care system. She helped shape the lives of many children in the foster care system and has left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Services will be held at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, Texas on August 8, 2025 at 10:30am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Denton Animal Support Foundation.
