Obituary

Joyce Mae (Wooten) Atkinson, 88, of Denton, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.  She was born in the Gribble Springs Community on June 9, 1932 to Connie and Essie (Barry) Harris.  Joyce loved to ride horses, was her daddy's girl, didn't care to wear dresses or shoes when she was little, was loving and kind and never met a stranger. Joyce married the love of her life, Chester Wooten, February 9, 1953. Together they were blessed with three boys, Terry, Tommy and Tracy, whom they cherished. Many years of love and laughter were shared until such time that Chester succumbed to his battle with Leukemia and he preceded Joyce in death April 28, 1979. Joyce retired from the Circulation Department of the Denton Record Chronicle in 1997, after 33 years of employment. Working for the Chronicle, she again, met so many people which was the aspect of her job she truly enjoyed. People who needed anything at the Chronicle would seek her out over others, not only for her knowledge, but her friendliness. Joyce married Franklin Atkinson in 1989. Joyce enjoyed traveling and camping with her family and friends over many years. She was an active member of the Highland Baptist Church.

The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors on Monday, September 7, 2020 from 3-5:00 p.m. for visitation. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at the Highland Baptist Church with Rev. Brandon McCarroll officiating.  Burial will follow at the Walling Cemetery in Cooke County.
