Julia Vee Godwin Davis, 95, of Denton passed away on December 22, 2014. She was born March 12, 1919, to Ballard and Virginia Bryan Godwin in Kaufman. She graduated from Kemp High School in 1936 and shortly afterward moved to Denton with her identical twin sister to attend TWU. She worked as a secretary for many years at TWU and UNT, retiring in 1981 from the College of Community Services. She married Charles Nathaniel Davis, Jr. on June 21, 1940, and they had celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary before his death on December 3, 2003.
Julia was active in the community and involved in a number of organizations including the TWU Alumnae Association (serving as President in the 1980s,) The Shakespeare Club and Bible Study Fellowship where she also worked in the Children's Program. Having been a faithful member of several local churches throughout more than seventy years, she was last a member of Gateway Baptist Church. She and her husband Charles enjoyed entertaining many large groups of friends, family, business associates, groups from both UNT and TWU as well as friends from their youth (including the 50th reunion of the DHS Class of 1936) in their concrete home in Argyle. Julia renewed many friendships and established many new ones in the nine years that she lived at the Denton Village of the Good Samaritan Society.
Julia is survived by three sons: Don Davis of Grapevine, Charlie Davis (Lynn) of Denton, and Mike Davis (Kathy) of Denison and two daughters: Diana Davis of Denton and Pat Sherman (Jud) of Argyle; 4 grandsons: Leigh Davis of Grapevine, Allan Davis of Keller, Nathan Sherman of Albuquerque and Matthew Davis of Denton; 4 granddaughters: Piper Davis of Denton, Tracy Sherman Carvalho of Frisco, Rachel Davis Moree of Sherman and Julia (Libby) Sherman Claycomb of Arlington; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Glenna Sessums of Sanger and Joan Barrett of Denver; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by granddaughter, Bethany Davis; parents, Ballard and Virginia Godwin; identical twin sister, Jessie Ellis Bryant; brother, Lester Bryan Godwin and sister, Jane Talley.
A celebration of Julia's life will be held on Saturday, December 27 at 10:00 am at Gateway Baptist Church, 2401 N. Bell Ave. with burial to follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation with her family will be on Friday, December 26 from 5:30 – 7 pm at DeBerry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider a donation in her memory to the Good Samaritan Society Denton Village Building Fund, Serve Denton, or a charity of your choice.
