Obituary

June Stevenson (Hobbs) Witt, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away Friday, February 2, 2024, in Denton, Texas, at the age of 89. She was born June 23, 1934, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

She attended Ohio Wesleyan University and Abilene Christian College before meeting her future husband, Scotty C. Witt, while working at Camp Hunt, a Christian summer youth camp in upstate New York. She completed her teaching degree at West Texas State University in 1971 and taught history and English at Tascosa High School and Amarillo High School.

Before June and Scotty were engaged, she spent two years in Nigeria as a missionary apprentice with the Wendell and Betty Broom family. June and Scotty wrote one another during that period, and as soon as she returned home, Scotty flew to Pennsylvania to propose to her. They were married December 14, 1957, in Villanova, Pennsylvania, and began their married life in Amarillo, Texas. They attended Central Church of Christ in Amarillo for 65 years.

June is survived by her husband and four children: Laura, Mark, Dale, and Jonathan; eight grandchildren: Aubrey, Isaac, Lian, Elizabeth, Sarah, Dante, Daniel, and John Paul; and six great grandchildren.

June was passionate about helping the underdog and those who were marginalized. In her youth she was an avid field hockey player. As an adult she loved photography, track and field, tennis, the ocean, and anything related to her children's endeavors. She was a huge advocate of education for both her own children and others. June was known for her generosity, humor, and candidness as well as her ongoing support of Camp Blue Haven.

June was preceded in death by her father, William Hobbs; her mother, Celia Mohney Hobbs; her brother, Milton Hobbs; and her two sisters, Charlotte Miller and Laura Hobbs.
