Obituary

Katherine Lay Moorehead joined her Savior in Heaven on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. Kay was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio on August 31, 1934, to Bob and Peggy Lay. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School and got a degree in Dental Hygiene from The Ohio State University. She was a member of Alpha XI Delta sorority. Later in life she attained a degree at The University of North Texas, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Finance, cum laude. While at North Texas, she was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma, an honorary business fraternity.

She married Ed Moorehead on June, 12, 1956 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon, Ohio. They had three children, Christina Moorehead Brandt of Coppell, Texas, Matthew David Moorehead of Little Rock, Arkansas and Russell Eric Moorehead of Houston, Texas. The Mooreheads have five grandchildren, Jason, Kelley and Holly Brandt and Mitchell and Amy Moorehead. She is survived by a sister, Jan Sawyer, of Columbus, Ohio.

Kay loved music. She sang with the Symphonic Choir at Ohio State and in many church choirs. She and Ed got introduced to opera at UNT in the 70's and became avid opera goers attending mostly Italian opera at Dallas, Ft. Worth, New York and Europe. She and Ed established an endowment at UNT for opera students.

She also loved to sail. She raced on the Ohio State sailing team. She and Ed raced sailboats early in their marriage, mostly in a class call Jet 14's, where they won the Midwestern District Championship and placed eighth in the National Championships in 1961.

Kay suffered from Alzheimers for ten years, however helped by the great and caring attention by the ladies at Golden Meadows in Denton for the last six years. She was also comforted by Faith Presbyterian Hospice for four years.

A service will be held at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton at 2 o'clock on Saturday, September 1, 2012. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be sent to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 7th Floor, 322 Eight Ave., New York, NY 10001
