Lela M. Carter , 96, of Denton passed away on February 17, 2017, in Denton, Texas. She was born in Pecos, Texas to James and Ludie Mae King. She grew up in Fort Worth and was raised by her mother and Step-Father, Arthur "Cookie" Harris. She married John L. Carter on August 5, 1939 in Denton. They had two children, Jane and Bill Carter. She was a homemaker and mother. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Carter of Denton, son, Bill Carter and wife Nelta Watson of Denton, three granddaughters, Margaret Robinson, Elizabeth Phounsavath and Lauren Watkins and eleven great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, husband, John Carter and two brothers; Tom and Brawley King. The family will receive friends at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, Texas on Monday, February 20, 2017 from 6-8 P.M. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church in Denton at 1:00 P.M..
